The championship leader hit the wall at turn 1 during Q1 and ended up sixteenth, Russell took advantage of the situation to take pole. The Italian trusts in coming back in the race as he did in Monza from nineteenth place.
Kimi Antonelli has experienced a reality check at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The championship leader who arrived in Baku with an 81-point advantage over his teammate, George Russell saw how his qualifying ended early after hitting the inside wall at turn 1 during Q1. A mistake that he himself described as "very unnecessary" and "very stupid" and that will force him to start from sixteenth position in Saturday's race.
The incident occurred when Antonelli had just started a lap in Q1. The Italian who had set a competitive time in the first minutes of the session, underestimated the grip of the track and crashed into the wall. The telemetry showed that the impact damaged the front left corner of his Mercedes and his track engineer Peter Bonnington, ordered him to stop in a safe place.
The radio conversation was revealing of the driver's frustration. "Are you sure?" Antonelli asked when Bonnington told him that they would not be able to repair the car: "Let me try to get back to the pits let me try" he insisted, but the damage to the steering or the upright was too serious. "I'm sorry, guys. My God" the Italian lamented, to which the engineer responded saying that it was nothing, not to worry, that it was nothing.
Despite the crash, Antonelli officially managed to qualify for Q2 thanks to the time he had set in the first minutes, however he had to watch the rest of the session from the garage, helpless, while his teammate took the pole position by almost a second of difference over Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri: "It was a very unnecessary mistake, obviously I misjudged with the grip so different compared to the first lap. I hit the wall, a very unnecessary mistake so soon, it's a good way to come back down to earth and remind me that I need to be at the top at all times, because otherwise I make these mistakes, and a very stupid one" Antonelli declared after the session.
Antonelli's mistake represents a golden opportunity for Russell who now has the possibility of closing the gap in the championship. The Briton who will start from pole, needs to take advantage of every opportunity to get closer to the leader and Baku, with its long straights and its close walls, is a circuit where surprises are the order of the day.
Antonelli for his part trusts in his ability to come back, just a few weeks ago, in Monza, he managed to go from nineteenth position to victory in his home race: "I'm looking forward to tomorrow, I hope to be able to recover many positions. The car is fast so we are ready to give the best of ourselves. I hope tomorrow is a good race" the Italian stated.
Saturday's race presents itself as a major challenge for Antonelli: Coming back from sixteenth position on an urban circuit like Baku is not an easy task but the Italian has already demonstrated that he is capable of the best and the worst, his mistake in qualifying is a reminder that, in Formula 1, the line between success and failure is extremely thin.
The championship leader will have to demonstrate his maturity and his ability to recover in a race that promises strong emotions.
