Hamilton praises Mercedes' bet on Antonelli, a driver many doubted after his irregular 2025.
When Toto Wolff decided to bet on Kimi Antonelli for the Mercedes seat, many in the paddock raised their eyebrows since, although the young Italian had shown flashes of talent in his debut season, he had also accumulated an irregular European tour in 2025 that left doubts about his ability to manage the pressure of a top team. A year later, those doubts have been dispelled; Antonelli leads the championship with 365 points, nine victories, and fifteen podiums, and is one step away from becoming the youngest Formula 1 champion.
Lewis Hamilton, who briefly shared the Mercedes garage with Antonelli before leaving for Ferrari, has been a direct witness to that evolution and has not spared praise for the young driver: "Kimi had demonstrated his skills in the lower categories as well as his enthusiasm, his charisma and his good attitude towards everything. He always adapted very well to the environment; one could suppose that he was going to handle well the weight one has on top when one has to make all these appearances, but I think he has faced it with fortitude and I would say he has an unusual maturity for his age," the Briton declared.
Wolff's bet wasn't blind faith but a strategic decision based on long-term potential. Mercedes needed a driver who could grow with the team and, with the new 2026 regulations, adapt to a radically different car. Antonelli fit that profile: his learning capacity, work ethic, and emotional maturity made him the ideal candidate, even when the results didn't follow.
"I think it was the right decision to create an opportunity for a young and promising driver. I think he's handled it naturally; it's been great to see his performances this year. It is really impressive, and he deserves to be the champion," Hamilton added.
The Briton, who won six titles with Mercedes, knows better than anyone how difficult it is to manage the pressure of a dominant team, and seeing Antonelli do it with such solvency has made a deep impression on him.
Comparing him to his teammate, George Russell, is inevitable. Russell, who arrived at Mercedes with the label of future champion, has seen how Antonelli surpassed him in almost every record, bad luck has also played against him, with several retirements due to reliability problems but the truth is that the Italian has been more consistent and has taken better advantage of the opportunities.
Antonelli's story is that of a precocious talent who has known how to surround himself with the right people and who has had the mental strength not to collapse in difficult moments. His progression recalls that of other great champions who arrived in Formula 1 under enormous pressure and, against all odds, knew how to rise to the task.
Wolff, who has always had a special nose for young talent, has been right again, and Antonelli has more than justified the trust placed in him with his performance. Both Hamilton and the other drivers on the grid cannot deny the talent the young Italian has, and if anything is as clear as day, it is that Mercedes' future passes through his hands, and everything indicates it will be bright.
