The Argentine is looking for a place in the American structure, though he would arrive as a reserve or development driver. His early departure from F2 and his link with General Motors fuel the possibility of a future in the top category.
Nicolás Varrone's name is once again resonating strongly in the Formula 1 paddock. The Argentine driver, who recently ended his participation in the 2026 Formula 2 season early with Van Amersfoort Racing, faces a future full of unknowns but also of opportunities, his link with General Motors through his role as an official Corvette driver, has fueled speculation about a possible incorporation into Cadillac, the American team that debuted in the top category this season.
Varrone's relationship with Cadillac is not new, the driver himself acknowledged weeks ago that he maintains a good relationship with the team although he also admitted that the conversations were conditioned by his performance in Formula 2, despite showing flashes of speed, the Argentine failed to transform those good moments into consistent results, which precipitated his departure from the championship last September 17, Varrone competed in eleven rounds and will not be present in the last rounds of the year.
That decision opens a range of possibilities for his future: one of them is to remain linked to single-seaters and seek a new opportunity in Formula 2 during 2027, another alternative is to return with greater prominence to endurance racing, a discipline in which he already has a recognized trajectory and where he has built a good part of his international prestige, but there is a third especially attractive path: to approach the Cadillac F1 program directly.
The conversations, according to the available information, would point to studying a possible incorporation as a reserve or development driver, this role would give him access to the simulator and eventually to tests with Formula 1 cars, although for now there is no officially announced agreement. It would be a first step on his path to the elite, an opportunity to demonstrate his talent within a top-level structure.
One of the main obstacles is the FIA Super License, to compete as a full-time driver in a Grand Prix, Varrone needs to meet the established requirements to obtain it, for that reason carrying out tests with previous cars through the TPC program could be important within his preparation and allow him to advance in some of the necessary requirements, it is a process that requires time and planning, but that could open doors for him in the short or medium term.
Furthermore, Cadillac's full-time seats currently have other protagonists: the American team debuted in 2026 with Sergio "Checo" Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, while Zhou Guanyu occupies the reserve driver position, this makes talking about Varrone as a full-time driver for 2027 premature for now, however, the Argentine maintains an important advantage: he already belongs to the sports universe of General Motors and knows from within the competition structure of the American manufacturer.
In the short term, Varrone will return to a familiar environment, he is scheduled to compete in the Petit Le Mans with the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R next October 3, an event that will allow him to maintain his competitive rhythm while he defines his future. The question about his arrival in Formula 1 still does not have a definitive answer, Varrone maintains conversations and links that could bring him closer to Cadillac but currently he does not have a confirmed seat for 2027.
The coming weeks will be key to determining whether the Argentine continues looking for results in Formula 2, returns fully to endurance or finally manages to enter the Cadillac F1 structure.
