The Australian finished eighth after suffering front wing damage on the first lap from contact with Russell. The bad timing of the Virtual Safety Car and a complicated qualifying session hampered his race at Madring.
Oscar Piastri lived a real ordeal at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Australian McLaren driver, who arrived in Madrid hoping to score important points, was forced to settle for eighth position after a race marked by damage to his car and a series of adverse circumstances that prevented him from showing his true potential.
The problem began on the first lap, Piastri was involved in an incident with George Russell when the Briton's Mercedes crossed into his path toward the barriers, the Australian had nowhere to go and suffered damage to his front wing, specifically the endplate, which made him lose downforce for the rest of the race, the team was able to mitigate the problem at his only pit stop, but not fully solve it.
"It was quite painful, obviously, from lap 1, there wasn't much I could do from there" declared Piastri after the race. The Australian also pointed to the bad luck with the timing of the Virtual Safety Car: "The VSC timing certainly wasn't ideal for us, we stayed on the hards and it was a difficult afternoon" he explained.
Piastri had chosen not to pit under the VSC, betting on a long stint strategy in the hope of a later Safety Car or red flag. However, there were no further incidents and he was forced to make his stop in race conditions, which made him lose time and come out in traffic. Although he managed an overtake on Arvid Lindblad, one of the few of the day, he could not get past Franco Colapinto's Alpine in the final laps.
To understand Piastri's difficulties, you have to go back to Saturday's qualifying, the Australian needed an extra set of soft tires to secure his place in Q2, which left him as the only front running driver with a used set of the C4 compound for his first Q3 lap. On his second attempt with new tires he made a mistake at the start of the lap and could only qualify seventh, which left him in the middle of the pack, an always dangerous position at the narrow first corner of Madring.
"It was mainly the end of qualifying and then lap 1, obviously it was far from ideal, with damage throughout the race, it was hard like that, but today we tried to learn as much as possible to get more out of the car and out of my driving, hopefully we have learned some things for the rest of the year" summarized Piastri.
The 2026 season is being a constant contrast for Piastri. While his teammate Lando Norris accumulates five podiums, two wins, three poles and a Sprint win, the Australian has only two podiums, the last in Miami and a third place in a Sprint. In the championship, Norris is 66 points ahead of him, a difference that reflects Piastri's difficulty in finding consistency.
The Australian hopes his luck will change soon. The next round in Baku in two weeks gives him a chance for redemption. Last year Azerbaijan was the scene where his championship hopes suffered a hard blow after an early retirement, something Piastri will want to make up for when the Formula 1 paddock gathers again on the streets of the Azerbaijani capital.
