The Australian star shuts down shock replacement rumors, reaffirming his loyalty to McLaren despite Red Bull’s search for a successor to an increasingly frustrated Max Verstappen.

Oscar Piastri was put on the spot about the swirling speculation linking him to a shock move away from McLaren Racing and into a seat at Red Bull Racing. The Australian, who came agonizingly close to winning the 2025 Drivers' Championship, was asked directly about the rumors during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Piastri said the reports were news to him and that no conversations of any kind had taken place. He was quick to acknowledge the flattering nature of the speculation, but equally clear that his focus remains entirely on McLaren.

He described his confidence in the team as high, expressing his belief that they are capable of winning races and, in time, championships — and questioned why he would want to change anything given the strength of the relationship he has built there. That said, Piastri's situation at McLaren has not always been smooth.

His internal battle with Lando Norris for the 2025 Drivers' title reached a genuinely tense point, with the Australian reportedly frustrated by some of the team's decisions during that campaign — moments that left visible marks on an otherwise successful season in 2026.

Why Is Red Bull Interested in Oscar Piastri?

Red Bull's interest — if real — stems from the very real possibility of a Verstappen departure. The four-time world champion has been explicit about not ruling out stepping away from Formula 1, whether due to the team's inability to give him a competitive car for a second consecutive season or his frustration with the 2026 regulations.

In 2025, Verstappen lost the title to Norris after a year of Red Bull struggles. In 2026, the gap to Mercedes and Antonelli in the Constructors Standings remains wide. That two-year slide, combined with Verstappen's public discontent over the new regulations, means that the case for staying grows harder to make with every race weekend.

With those dynamics in play, it is entirely logical that Red Bull would begin sounding out the market for a potential replacement — and Piastri, as a driver who nearly became world champion and who operates at a level few on the current grid can match, would represent the most obvious high-profile target available.

The question of whether a move ever materializes remains open. But the fact that his name is being raised at all tells its own story about where Red Bull is headed into what could be a decisive summer.
