Red Bull's new Team Principal breaks the silence on Max's future, addressing team stability and his driver's pursuit of racing's ultimate package.
Max Verstappen's persistent criticism of Formula 1's new 2026 regulations has triggered a steady stream of speculation about the future of the four-time world champion. The Dutch driver himself has not ruled out stepping away from the sport entirely to pursue endurance racing and prototype competition.
Beyond that, the possibility of Verstappen switching teams has also been widely discussed — with Mercedes, his longtime suitor, once again entering the conversation, alongside less-expected destinations such as Ferrari and McLaren.
Meanwhile, high-profile exits, including Adrian Newey's, have raised questions about Red Bull Racing's internal stability and what this means for Verstappen's long-term future with the team.
The Dutchman has made no secret of his stance: he will always chase the best possible package — whether that means the best car, the best engine, or both. Therefore, Red Bull must prove that they are capable of that with Ford as soon as possible.
What Has Red Bull Said About Max Verstappen's Future?
Laurent Mekies, Team Principal at Red Bull Racing, addressed the swirling rumors around Verstappen and the impact of recent high-profile departures from the team in comments to the BBC.
"Obviously, we talk to Max every day. And Max knows motorsport inside out. He's living and breathing this team. He knows most of these guys. He understands very well the dynamics that can occur. The team has had a lot of success, and you can't promote everyone. Some people make their own choices."
"One thing is certain — we haven't solved everything. But there's no question that progress has been made to give our drivers something more consistent. How does that translate in the standings? It's impossible to know right now."
"But in terms of what we alone are doing on track — in terms of delivering a more consistent product to our drivers — I'm confident we've made some progress. Do we know if we've cracked it all? No. We know we haven't figured everything out yet," he acknowledged.
In recent years, Red Bull has lost many of its key pillars: Christian Horner, who served as Team Principal since the team's foundation in Fórmula 1; Adrian Newey, the design genius behind Sebastian Vettel's and Max Verstappen's championship-winning cars among others in other teams; and Helmut Marko, the veteran advisor closely tied to the Verstappen family who helped shape the careers of countless young talents as Carlos Sainz, Alexander Albon, and others.
