As Lewis Hamilton battles for form at Ferrari, Ralf Schumacher issues a blunt warning that the legendary champion will never outpace his younger teammate Charles Leclerc.
When Ferrari confirmed the signing of Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season, the announcement generated the kind of excitement rarely seen in the paddock. Pairing the seven-time World Champion with Charles Leclerc under the banner of the sport's most iconic constructor seemed like a recipe for a genuine title assault. The reality, as the season played out, was far more sobering.
Ferrari struggled for consistency throughout 2025, leaving both drivers unable to mount a sustained challenge to the frontrunners, and Hamilton in particular found the transition to the Scuderia more difficult than anticipated. At several points during the year, speculation about his future — including the possibility of early retirement — entered the public conversation.
It is against that backdrop that former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has weighed in with a characteristically direct assessment, speaking on the Sky Sports Germany programme Backstage Boxengasse. Schumacher did not soften his message: "I have to say honestly that Hamilton is without doubt in a better position this year — of that there is no doubt," he began, acknowledging the early signs of improvement in 2026.
But he then shifted to a longer-term verdict: "However, one also has to admit that, looking at the overall picture across the year and over the long term, he has not the slightest chance against Leclerc. That is simply how things are. The time has come. I know that some people will hate me again for this. But Hamilton has achieved everything he could achieve. He is one of the most successful drivers — or, as the British would say, the most successful driver in Formula 1 history. I would put it differently: one of the most successful, and that title is fully deserved."
He closed with a phrase that captured both his admiration and his conviction: "What he is showing this year, that comeback, is fantastic. But everything has an end — only a sausage has two! That is why I say it now: I think it is time to give the young ones their chance."
What Happened With Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari?
Lewis Hamilton's 2025 season with Ferrari was extremely difficult, with major struggles to perform at the level expected following his high-profile move to the Scuderia. His problems were so severe that the possibility of retirement was raised publicly on more than one occasion.
However, the regulation changes arriving in 2026 brought renewed hope that the British driver could rediscover his best form. So far, the early signs have been more encouraging — but Hamilton still remains far from the possibility of fighting for victories or podiums on a consistent basis.
