Mohammed Ben Sulayem confirms that Formula 1 will abandon the current power units in 2030 and will recover the V8 engines, the measure seeks lighter cars, lower development cost and a sound that enamors the fans.

Formula 1 has a date for the return of the V8 engines. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA president, has confirmed that in 2030 the category will abandon the current hybrid power units and return to eight-cylinder engines, whose last era ran from 2006 to 2013. The decision follows a year of strong criticism of the 2026 technical regulations, which have generated more headaches than satisfaction.

Nikolas Tombazis himself, FIA single-seater director, acknowledged last August that the current problems were foreseeable: "We expected many of the criticisms that arose. We anticipated many of the problems criticized today; we tried to make changes, but couldn't because of the governance system that had been approved. When the simulations arrived in 2022, we realized that these problems existed, but by then development was too advanced, and some manufacturers had already invested too many resources to be able to radically change the rules," admitted the Greek engineer. Four years before the new technical era began, the FIA already knew it was heading toward a complicated scenario.

The complaints were not limited to the offices. Drivers like Max Verstappen warned, after testing the new power unit in the simulator, that the path was wrong. Terms like clipping, super clipping, battery, charge, discharge, energy deployment and software management were incorporated into the usual vocabulary of Formula 1 reflecting the complexity of engines that distribute power 50% between the thermal and electric impeller, the reaction of drivers and fans was forceful.

For 2027 and 2028, the FIA had already planned to gradually reduce the dominance of the electric motor and increase that of the combustion engine, a move that would also shorten the Grands Prix by 15 kilometers from next year, but Ben Sulayem has gone further and doubled the bet. During the announcement of Formula 1's return to Africa in Rwanda, the Emirati confirmed that the V8S will return in 2030.

"The new V8 will be in 2030. As a driver, the first thing we need is light cars, so they'll be about 80 kilograms lighter. The second aspect is to maintain the business; it is going to be at least 50 percent less in research and development on the engine, and thirdly, it is about the fans; it is about the sound, not the noise," Ben Sulayem declared. The FIA president assures that he has the support of the manufacturers and of Formula 1 itself to carry this change forward.

The return of the V8S would mark a radical shift in the category's technical philosophy, which in 2026 bet on hybridization as a step toward sustainability. The FIA argues that the new engines will be lighter, cheaper to develop, and will offer a more attractive spectacle for fans; the challenge will be to convince the current manufacturers that the investment made in the hybrid units will not be lost and that the future of Formula 1 lies in recovering the essence of combustion engines; time will tell if this new course returns to the category the shine that many consider lost...
