As Max Verstappen’s future looms over the paddock, a potential Ferrari lure and internal power struggles at Mercedes could tempt the Italian sensation to leave his Silver Arrows home.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is the undeniable sensation of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. In just his second season with Mercedes, the young Italian has placed himself in the best possible position to fight for the title — and the criticism that surrounded his original appointment, viewed by many as premature, has all but evaporated.

Following Antonelli's victory at the Miami Grand Prix, the excitement surrounding the Italian driver has reached new heights. The records he has broken, the manner in which he has driven, and the sheer composure he has shown at such a young age have left the paddock genuinely in awe. There is still a long season ahead, but winning a World Championship at his age would cement his place as one of the sport's historic figures.

No one understands his value better than Mercedes, who regard him as their most prized asset — the driver chosen to lead the Silver Arrows back to the era of dominance they enjoyed with Hamilton. And yet, in Formula 1, certainties are rare. The possibility of Antonelli making a move at some point in the future cannot be entirely dismissed, no matter how strong his current situation appears.

The ripple effects of a Max Verstappen departure from Red Bull Racing could generate the kind of domino effect that creates very uncomfortable dynamics for the young Italian. Pairing Verstappen with Antonelli at the same team would be a headline-grabbing story, but it would also force team management into an almost impossible position regarding internal hierarchy and priority.

Which Team Could Lure Kimi Antonelli Away From Mercedes?

Peter Windsor, a respected analyst with deep roots in Formula 1, outlined the scenario that could ultimately take Antonelli out of the Silver Arrows setup. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Windsor framed it around the Verstappen question:

"It's exciting to imagine what would happen if Max Verstappen left Red Bull. There's an almost obsessive fascination with that idea, especially when nothing seems to change and the only topic of conversation is the possibility of Max leaving."

"Now there's talk that George would have to give up his seat to Max, who would then become Kimi's teammate. But does Max really want to race alongside Kimi at Mercedes? Being Italian, if he receives a major offer from Ferrari in two years — say, after he's already won a world championship with Mercedes — it would be very hard for him to turn it down, wouldn't it?"

"He wouldn't be intimidated by Verstappen, but the situation could evolve into one where Kimi ends up accumulating crucial points in battles against — for example — Charles Leclerc at McLaren, or wherever the future takes him," Windsor explained.

The scenario remains speculative for now, but it underscores a fascinating truth about modern Formula 1: even when everything looks perfect on the surface, the sport's constant state of motion means that today's certainties can quickly become tomorrow's negotiations.
