The Finn faces the Mexico GP with a 50-place penalty for power unit changes, absent from the media due to illness and without a confirmed contract for 2027.
Valtteri Bottas is going through one of the most delicate moments of his career. The Finnish Cadillac driver faces the Mexico Grand Prix with a 50-place grid penalty after the change of multiple elements of his power unit, a sanction that added to his absence from Thursday's media commitments due to illness and to the uncertainty about his future in the team, paints an unflattering panorama for the experienced driver.
Cadillac, which uses Ferrari engines, has installed in Bottas's car a new internal combustion engine, a turbocharger, an energy storage system, an electronic control unit and a kinetic motor generator, all these elements represent the first infraction of the season in each category which translates into a penalty of ten places for each one of them. In total 50 positions of sanction that will force Bottas to start from the back of the grid, regardless of his result in qualifying.
The situation is especially complicated because Bottas could not fulfill his media obligations on Thursday due to an illness, his teammate and local hero, Sergio Pérez, also felt unwell and arrived late at the circuit on Friday, despite this both will participate in the free practice sessions as planned although the American Colton Herta will occupy Bottas's car in the first session on Friday to comply with the young driver requirement.
But beyond the penalty and the illness Bottas's future at Cadillac F1 team remains an unknown, the Finn's contract ends at the end of this season and he has not yet been confirmed for 2027 despite the fact that his teammate Sergio Pérez recently announced his continuity with the team until 2029. A situation that contrasts with the stability that the Mexican seems to have found and that leaves the Finn in a vulnerable position in the driver market.
Bottas, who has accumulated 264 races in Formula 1, arrived at Cadillac in 2025 with the mission of leading the American project in its debut season, however his performance has not been up to expectations and the lack of results has fueled speculation about a possible departure. The team, for its part, has made clear that it wants to keep Pérez as its reference driver and Bottas's continuity will depend on the decisions taken in the coming weeks.
The Mexico Grand Prix will be a test of fire for Bottas, with a penalty that will force him to come back from the back, the Finn will have the opportunity to demonstrate that he is still competitive and that he deserves a place on the 2027 grid but the context is not favorable and time is running against him. The illness, the sanction and the contractual uncertainty combine in a cocktail that could mark the end of his stage at Cadillac.
Valtteri Bottas needs a result that returns his confidence and that convinces the team that he still has a lot to contribute, furthermore his experience is something that Cadillac especially values and alongside Pérez, they dream big for what is coming.
