Why Sergio Pérez could start the 2026 season without a fast engine cover image

Ferrari’s decision to focus on reliability over performance in the early phase of the new regulations could define Checo Pérez’s debut season with Cadillac before the speed fight truly begins.

Sergio Pérez and Cadillac could receive a Ferrari engine that prioritizes other factors over speed.

Fred Vasseur, team principal of Scuderia, said the following in statements published by Motorsport: "On the eve of such a radical technical change, the most important thing is to rack up miles.

"In the initial phase, the search for performance is not a priority. Being able to rack up miles allows us to validate the technical options in terms of reliability, then, once this process is complete, we will move on to the search for performance.

“That said, I don't think we'll see a ‘mule car’ at the Barcelona tests, but let's say a specific A, which will be followed immediately by others,” he commented.

It's important to remember that the team of the Mexican driver will use the engines provided by the Force of Maranello. Then, every decision taken by the Scuderia will directly impact the performance of the Mexican driver and his team.

How much will Checo Pérez earn at Cadillac?

Sergio Pérez is back in Formula 1  and now information has emerged about the Mexican's salary at Cadillac. According to recent reports, the Jalisco-born driver will earn a significant amount with the American team: "PlanetF1.com has learned that Pérez has signed a multi-year contract with Cadillac.

"In addition, it is suggested that he has a base salary of close to $10 million, a contract that is reportedly equivalent to his previous contract with Red Bull. The driver will also reportedly receive bonuses for achieving championship positions, podium finishes, and a percentage of official merchandise sales will increase victories, and his income.

"This is a huge advantage for Pérez, who was reportedly responsible for more than 60% of Red Bull's online merchandise sales. Cadillac has been interested in signing Pérez based primarily on what he can offer as a driver, rather than the impressive list of sponsors he has boasted about in the past," they said.
