Financial constraints and contract buyouts stalled a potential move for the Mexican veteran, forcing James Vowles to double down on a record-breaking deal to retain his superstar Spaniard.
Williams Racing livened up the Formula 1 summer break by announcing contract renewals for its lead drivers during the week leading up to the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Both Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz signed extensions to their current agreements to remain with the British team beyond the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
However, just a few weeks ago, this scenario seemed unlikely, as rumors regarding potential replacements for these drivers had begun to circulate intensely. Specifically, there was talk of the Madrid-born driver leaving because the Grove-based team had fallen far short of the expectations promised to the number 55 driver when he was signed following his departure from Ferrari for the 2024 season.
That is where Sergio Pérez entered the picture; his performance with Cadillac at the start of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship had caught the eye of teams higher up the grid. There was even talk of discussions between the Mexican driver and the team regarding a potential signing in the near future.
Why didn't Williams sign Sergio Pérez?
According to information revealed by ESPN journalist José Antonio Cortés, the move to sign Sergio Pérez did not materialize because the British team would have had to pay a significant sum to buy out the Mexican driver's contract with Cadillac.
That was one of the reasons why Williams reportedly decided to put all its resources into renewing Carlos Sainz's contract, which is also speculated to have been signed with multi-million dollar conditions. In doing so, the team led by James Vowles managed to convince Sainz to stay, despite the fact that on-track results have been far worse than anticipated.
It is worth remembering that Carlos Sainz left Ferrari to make way for the Maranello-based team to sign Lewis Hamilton—one of the most shocking moves in the history of modern motorsport. The Spanish driver repeatedly stated that he signed with Williams due to their exciting future plans to compete at the front of the grid—something that, as of the midway point of the 2026 season, has not materialized.
Although there might still be options for Sergio Pérez in other teams such as Alpine, Aston Martin or Haas, the seat at Williams seemed one of the most realistic for Checo Pérez. Furthermore, Max Verstappen’s contract renewal with Red Bull Racing has had a direct impact on the driver market, as the Dutchman's potential departure was expected to trigger a domino effect.
