The 2026 Formula 1 season began with the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, where George Russell took the victory after having secured pole position in Saturday’s qualifying. The race was marked by several Virtual Safety Cars, changing strategies and numerous incidents th
The podium was completed by Kimi Antonelli, who capped off a great weekend despite the heavy crash he suffered in Free Practice 3, and Charles Leclerc, who managed to secure a solid third place for Ferrari.
From the start it became clear that the 2026 season promises to be intense. The race featured multiple pace changes and several unexpected situations, something many attribute to the new technical regulations, which seem to be creating a much more competitive championship.
The day began with an unexpected blow for the local fans. Oscar Piastri suffered an accident during the formation lap, which left him out of the race before it began.
According to reports, the McLaren driver applied too much power with the tires still cold, which caused the loss of control of the single-seater and his crash into one of the circuit’s walls. In this way, the Australian once again missed the chance to fight for victory in his home country, something that had already happened to him last season.
When the lights finally went out, the race began with a very intense start. The Ferraris took advantage of the power of their turbo and Charles Leclerc managed to overtake Russell and Antonelli, who had started from the front row.
During the opening laps there was an interesting battle between Leclerc and Russell, with several overtaking attempts and pace changes that kept the tension high for approximately the first twelve laps.
The appearance of Virtual Safety Cars at different moments of the race ended up changing the development of the competition, cooling the pace and reshuffling the strategies.
Ferrari failed to capitalize on the neutralizations. The Italian team did not take advantage of the two Virtual Safety Cars, and its strategy ended up affecting tire management.
Little by little, Ferrari’s performance began to drop and that allowed Mercedes to regain control of the race.
Russell and Antonelli opted for a very solid strategy, keeping hard tires from lap 12, which allowed them to maintain a competitive pace until the end.
One of the great protagonists of the race was Max Verstappen, who had started from 20th position and managed to climb up to sixth place.
The Dutch driver took perfect advantage of the neutralizations and strategic opportunities, delivering a very consistent race that also earned him recognition as Driver of the Day.
His performance left good feelings for the fans of the world champion and raises expectations for the rest of the season.
Retirements and technical problems
The race was also marked by several mechanical issues and retirements. Only 17 of the 22 drivers managed to see the checkered flag.
Among those who could not complete the race were Nico Hülkenberg and Oscar Piastri, who were unable to compete from the start.
The first retirement on track was Isack Hadjar, due to a problem with the power unit. A similar situation was experienced by Valtteri Bottas, who also had to retire due to mechanical failures.
Meanwhile, the Aston Martin drivers, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, had a complicated race, making several pit stops while the team tested different setups in order to improve performance for the upcoming races.
Mercedes starts the championship strong
Finally, George Russell crossed the finish line in first place after completing the 58 laps, securing victory in the Australian Grand Prix.
With Saturday’s pole position and Sunday’s win, Mercedes begins the 2026 season as one of the strongest teams in the championship, making it clear that it will be a very difficult rival to beat in this new regulatory cycle.
