Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has won three Super Bowls already, and during that time he's developed a reputation for being his best in the biggest moments. That's his MO, pulling out games when things are really tight.
He loves the big moments.
In all three of his Super Bowl wins, he had to come from behind to win. And last year, the Chiefs went 12-0 in one-score games, including the playoffs, setting an NFL record.
That seems like a long time ago this year, though. The Chiefs are just 5-5 this season heading into Sunday's 1 p.m. ET game at home against the 8-2 Indianapolis Colts, one of the big surprises of the year.
The Chiefs, in their five wins, have outscored their opponents by a whopping 95 points. But all five losses have been one-score games. They are 0-5 in one-score games after going 12-0 last year.
That's just stunning.
Mahomes knows that they've made things hard on themselves, and their margin for error in the final seven games has become razor thin.
"Obviously we're 5-5 and not where we want to be at, but we get to write the rest of this season's story. It starts this week against the Colts at Arrowhead,'' Mahomes said. "I'm excited for us to go out there and do it.''
The Chiefs have lost two straight games at Buffalo and Denver and here's an amazing statistic. Mahomes has NEVER lost three games in a row in the regular season during his time with the Chiefs. Kansas City hasn't lost three straight since they lost four in a row in 2017 when Alex Smith was the starter.
They get a team in the Colts today that's been playing well under quarterback Daniel Jones. He's actually got better numbers than Mahomes so far.
Jones has rolled up 2,659 passing yards in 223 completions so far this season, while Mahomes has thrown for 2,625 yards in 233 completions. Jones is fourth in the NFL in passing yards, and Mahomes is fifth.
The Chiefs have won nine straight AFC West titles, but that's in serious jeopardy after losing at Denver last weekend. The Broncos are 9-2 and have a 3.5-game lead on the Chiefs, who are in third place, a game behind the Los Angeles Chargers, too.
Here is the Chiefs schedule the rest of the way;
Nov. 23 (Sunday) — Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs, 1 p.m. ET
Nov. 27 (Thursday) — Kansas City Chiefs at Dallas Cowboys, 4:30 p.m. ET
Dec. 7 (Sunday) — Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs, 8:20 p.m. ET
Dec. 14 (Sunday) — Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, 1 p.m. ET
Dec. 21 (Sunday) — Kansas City Chiefs at Tennessee Titans, 1 p.m. ET
Dec. 25 (Thursday) — Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs, 8:15 p.m. ET
Jan. 3/4 (Flex) — Kansas City Chiefs at Las Vegas Raiders
The Colts are as healthy as they've been all year on defense, which will help in attacking Mahomes and Kansas City. Here's the latest from Colts Roundtable publisher Jake Arthur.
