Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy headline a wide-open 2026 Tour Championship at East Lake, with $10 million and the FedEx Cup on the line.
The 2026 Tour Championship arrives at East Lake Golf Club with something the PGA Tour hasn’t had much of lately: genuine uncertainty at the top.
There’s no runaway favorite, no obvious coronation waiting to happen and no shortage of players capable of walking away with the FedEx Cup and a $10 million winner’s share.
That puts Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy squarely in the spotlight.
Scheffler has a chance to become just the third multiple-time FedEx Cup champion, joining Tiger Woods and McIlroy.
He also enters Atlanta with another massive prize in play: a potential PGA Tour Player of the Year honor.
McIlroy, meanwhile, can make history of his own by capturing a record fourth FedEx Cup title.
But this isn’t simply a two-man show.
Matt Fitzpatrick, Chris Gotterup and Wyndham Clark each have three PGA Tour victories in 2026, keeping the season-long race for top-player honors very much alive.
One more win at East Lake would give any of them a powerful final argument.
Then there are the dangerous outsiders.
Patrick Cantlay hasn’t won in more than four years, but his recent ball-striking numbers suggest he’s getting hot at exactly the right time.
Over the last three months, he ranks third in this field in strokes gained tee to green and second in approach play.
Sam Burns is another name worth watching. He’s still looking for his first win of the season, but his combination of strong ball-striking and elite putting gives him the profile of a player who could suddenly catch fire.
And don’t forget Russell Henley, who finished runner-up at East Lake last year and returns to Georgia with plenty of course comfort.
The money beyond first place is enormous, too.
Second place pays $5 million, while even eighth place clears $1 million. That guarantees pressure deep into Sunday, even for players who fall out of the championship race.
The biggest question, though, is whether golf finally gets the head-to-head showdown fans have been waiting for.
Scheffler and McIlroy are the two biggest names in the field, but they rarely seem to peak in the same week.
If that changes at East Lake, the Tour Championship could deliver the kind of finish this season deserves.
And if it doesn’t, there’s more than enough firepower behind them to blow the whole thing open.
