Ben James fired a 62 at the Wyndham Championship, keeping his FedExCup hopes alive while Beau Hossler and Sahith Theegala matched him atop the leaderboard.
Ben James didn’t arrive at the Wyndham Championship looking for a respectable finish. He arrived needing something much bigger ... A win.
The former Virginia star and 2026 PGA TOUR University No. 1 put himself squarely in that conversation Thursday, firing an 8-under 62 at Sedgefield Country Club and turning the PGA TOUR regular-season finale into an early showcase for one of golf’s newest young stars.
James made eagle on both par 5s and briefly had an even more ridiculous number in play before bogeys at Nos. 16 and 18 slowed his charge. Even with the late stumble, James finished the opening round tied near the top with Beau Hossler and Sahith Theegala.
That's important because James has no margin for error in the FedExCup race.
He entered Wyndham needing to win the tournament to jump inside the top 70 and qualify for next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship.
His PGA TOUR status isn’t threatened - his PGA TOUR University finish gives him exemption through 2027 - but reaching the playoffs this quickly would be another major statement.
James isn’t the only young college golf phenom making postseason noise.
Jackson Koivun entered the week sitting exactly No. 70 in the FedExCup standings after winning the 3M Open two weeks earlier. Koivun opened with a 67, leaving him in decent position but hardly safe with three rounds remaining.
Meanwhile, Hossler has an even more straightforward assignment. Sitting No. 122 entering the week, he also needs a victory to extend his season.
He opened with a 62, highlighted by four consecutive birdies and an eagle at the par-5 15th.
Then there was Theegala, who produced one of the strangest scorecards imaginable.
Theegala played his first nine holes without making a single par, recording eight birdies and one bogey.
He finally cooled off on the back nine before adding a closing birdie for another 62. Unlike James and Hossler, Theegala entered the week safely inside the playoff field at No. 43.
Eric Cole stayed within striking distance after a 63, while Matti Schmid - No. 67 in the standings - shot 64 and remains directly on the FedExCup bubble.
Brooks Koepka also has work ahead of him. Needing a strong Wyndham finish to reach the playoffs in his first season back on the PGA TOUR, Koepka opened with a 67.
But Thursday belonged largely to James.
Two months removed from college golf, he’s suddenly four rounds away from doing something nobody expected this quickly: crashing the PGA TOUR postseason before his professional career has barely gotten started.
