Ben James shoots 64 to grab the World Wide Technology Championship lead as darkness delays the cut and PGA Tour players battle for valuable FedEx Cup Fall points.
Ben James is making a strong case that he's ready to become the PGA Tour's next breakout star.
The 23-year-old rookie grabbed the lead at the 2026 World Wide Technology Championship on Friday, firing a bogey-free 8-under 64 to reach 15-under 129 through two rounds at El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
James holds a one-shot advantage over Peter Malnati, who matched his 64 to reach 14 under. Zac Blair sits alone in third at 12 under after a second-round 68.
But the leaderboard isn't completely settled.
Friday's second round was suspended because of darkness at 5:48 p.m. local time, leaving 12 players on the course. Play is scheduled to resume Saturday at 7:20 a.m. local time before the 36-hole cut becomes official.
The projected cut stood at 5 under when play stopped.
For James, the bigger story is another impressive performance in what has become a remarkable rookie campaign.
The former University of Virginia standout has already recorded four top-five finishes since turning professional in June. Friday's 64 marked his 14th round of 65 or better in just 13 PGA Tour appearances.
"I've been rolling it well and playing well," James said while discussing his recent scoring success.
His latest round featured five consecutive birdies around the turn and another birdie at his final hole.
Malnati nearly finished the day tied for first but missed a 12-foot par putt on his final hole.
Stephan Jaeger and Denny McCarthy are tied for fourth at 11 under, while Sudarshan Yellamaraju made one of Friday's biggest moves with a 9-under 63 to reach 10 under.
Beyond the championship race, significant financial and career implications are developing across the field.
The $6 million tournament offers $1.08 million to the winner, but the FedEx Cup Fall standings could matter even more to players fighting for their futures.
Only the top 100 players in the final FedEx Cup Fall standings retain full PGA Tour status for 2027, making every birdie increasingly important.
Players finishing between 51st and 60th also earn opportunities in the first two signature events next season.
That makes the pressure especially intense for golfers near the cutoff, including Jason Day, Mackenzie Hughes and Taylor Pendrith.
Defending champion Ben Griffin is also competing at the Tiger Woods-designed course, which is hosting the tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
Golf Channel will carry Saturday's third-round coverage from 3-6 p.m. Eastern, with streaming available through GolfChannel.com and the Golf Channel app.
With two rounds remaining and the cut still undecided, James has positioned himself for a potentially career-changing weekend.
Now comes the challenge of turning another brilliant start into his first PGA Tour victory.
