Ben Kohles shoots a brilliant 9-under 62 at the Baycurrent Classic in Japan, climbing into contention while strengthening his bid to secure a PGA Tour card for 2027.

Ben Kohles has spent much of 2026 fighting to secure his future on the PGA Tour. Now, he's suddenly within striking distance of something considerably bigger.

The 36-year-old Dallas native delivered a spectacular 9-under 62 at the Baycurrent Classic on Friday, matching the lowest round of the tournament and climbing into a tie for third at Yokohama Country Club.

At 9-under 133 through 36 holes, Kohles trails co-leaders Keith Mitchell and Jacob Bridgeman by just two strokes heading into the weekend.

For a player who has divided his season between the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour, the timing couldn't be better.

Kohles entered the tournament ranked 84th in the FedExCup Fall standings, still working to secure a position inside the top 100 that guarantees full PGA Tour status for 2027.

His decision to concentrate on the PGA Tour's fall schedule rather than compete in this week's Korn Ferry Tour Championship appears increasingly justified.

Friday's bogey-free performance included seven birdies and an eagle, highlighted by a spectacular 50-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th.

The round moved Kohles into contention alongside Max Homa, Mac Meissner and Zach Bauchou.

But there's more at stake than one impressive leaderboard finish.

Kohles is projected to climb to 76th in the FedExCup standings, providing valuable breathing room in the season-long points race.

And with five fall tournaments remaining, a push toward the top 60 could earn him entry into two prestigious 2027 Signature Events.

The bigger prize, however, remains his first PGA Tour victory.

Kohles has won five times on the Korn Ferry Tour, including June's BMW Charity Pro-Am, where he defeated Logan McAllister by four strokes.

That victory helped restore his confidence.

“Getting that win on the Korn Ferry really kind of catapulted this whole second half of the year for me,” Kohles said.

His statistics suggest another breakthrough could be approaching.

Kohles leads the PGA Tour in driving accuracy at 79.34 percent and greens in regulation at 74.19 percent. He also ranks second in proximity to the hole.

Those numbers reflect a player whose ball-striking has rarely been the problem.

Now, after a remarkable Friday in Japan, Kohles has positioned himself to accomplish two goals at once: secure his PGA Tour future and finally become a winner at golf's highest level.
