Cameron Young opened the Cadillac Championship with a bogey-free 64, while Jordan Spieth started fast at Doral.
Cameron Young wasted no time making noise at the Cadillac Championship.
Young fired a bogey-free 8-under 64 on Thursday at Trump International Doral, taking a one-shot lead after the opening round of the $20 million PGA TOUR Signature Event.
It’s the TOUR’s first event at Doral in 10 years, and Young looked comfortable immediately.
His putter did most of the damage. Young rolled in 98 feet of putts and added several long birdie makes, including three from 25 feet or longer.
He also nearly holed his approach at the par-4 second, knocking it inside an inch to jump-start his round.
Young said the course allowed aggressive shots into greens, but the key was avoiding trouble, especially with water in play across Doral.
Jordan Spieth and Alex Smalley sit one shot back after opening with 7-under 65s. Spieth’s round included a chip-in eagle at the par-5 eighth, helping him overcome two back-nine bogeys.
He credited detailed prep work from Wednesday’s pro-am for helping him manage misses and stay in position.
Nick Taylor opened with a 66 and sits alone in fourth, while Nico Echavarria posted a 67 to stay within three shots of the lead.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had a frustrating start. Scheffler birdied three of his first five holes but couldn’t build on the momentum, playing the rest of the round in 2 over to finish at 1-under 71.
He said he didn’t capitalize enough and failed to “steal” shots when his game got slightly off.
Doral also proved difficult for former winners. Adam Scott, the last PGA TOUR winner at the course in 2016, shot 76. Justin Rose, who won there in 2012, opened with 74.
Young, though, figured it out fast. One round in, he’s the man everyone is chasing.
