Lightning stopped Round 1 at Colonial, but Tom Kim, Erik van Rooyen, Ryan Gerard and Andrew Putnam still turned Thursday into a leaderboard fight.
The Charles Schwab Challenge wasted no time delivering drama Thursday at Colonial Country Club, and not all of it came from birdies.
Round 1 was halted at 4:15 p.m. local time after electricity was detected in the Fort Worth area, forcing players off the course and freezing a crowded leaderboard at one of the PGA TOUR’s most historic stops.
After a two-hour, five-minute delay, play resumed at 6:20 p.m., giving the field a late-evening sprint to finish what had already become a chaotic opening round.
And when the horn blew, Tom Kim was right in the middle of the action.
Kim sat at 6-under through 17 holes, sharing the lead with Erik van Rooyen, who was also through 17.
Ryan Gerard and Andrew Putnam had already posted 64s, putting both in the clubhouse at 6-under and making sure the leaders had no room to coast once play restarted.
That’s the beauty and brutality of Colonial. It doesn’t need wild scoring conditions to create tension.
One loose swing, one bad lie or one weather delay can change the entire rhythm of a round. Thursday had all of that.
The Charles Schwab Challenge also carries extra weight this week because it’s the final chance for players to qualify for the Memorial Tournament through the Aon Swing 5 and Aon Next 10.
That means this isn’t just another stop on the PGA TOUR schedule. For several players, Colonial could be the difference between getting into one of the season’s biggest elevated events or being left on the outside.
The field has plenty of recognizable names, too. Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im, Russell Henley, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, Ludvig Åberg, Tony Finau, Akshay Bhatia and Keegan Bradley are among the players drawing attention this week.
But Thursday belonged to the guys who attacked early and handled the stop-start pressure best.

Gerard and Putnam set the number. Kim and van Rooyen chased it. Everyone else now has to deal with it.
Colonial has always had a way of rewarding patience, precision and nerve. After a weather-interrupted start, the 2026 Charles Schwab Challenge already has a leaderboard worth watching and a Friday setup that could get spicy fast.
