Darren Fichardt eagled the final hole to stun Zach Johnson, claim his first PGA Tour Champions victory and secure a spot in the Charles Schwab Cup finale.
Darren Fichardt arrived at the Simmons Bank Championship fighting to keep his PGA Tour Champions season alive. He left Sunday with his first victory, a guaranteed spot in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and one of the most dramatic finishes of the year.
The 51-year-old South African eagled the par-5 18th hole at Pleasant Valley Country Club, snatching a one-shot victory from Zach Johnson in spectacular fashion.
Fichardt closed with an 8-under 64 to finish at 22-under, while Johnson also shot 64 to finish one stroke behind at 21-under.
And the timing couldn't have been better.
Fichardt entered the week ranked 46th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, 10 positions outside the top-36 cutoff for the season-ending championship. His victory vaulted him to 17th, securing his first appearance in the finale and full playing privileges for 2027.
"That's something fairytales are written about," Fichardt said.
The finish certainly belonged in a storybook.
Johnson, seeking his seventh PGA Tour Champions victory of 2026, birdied the final hole to reach 21-under. With both players tied at 20-under entering the 18th, Fichardt needed something special.
He delivered an eagle to win outright.
The victory capped a remarkable week that included a second-round 61, which tied the tournament's 18-hole scoring record.
For Fichardt, the triumph represented the payoff from a season spent fighting simply to get into tournaments. The veteran had relied on Monday qualifying and strong finishes to earn additional starts.
Now he's a PGA Tour Champions winner.
"The putter, I'm going to stick with that putter," Fichardt said. "That putter was unbelievable this week."
The celebration was especially meaningful with his wife serving as his caddie.
"We're best friends and to have her on the bag, it's amazing," he said.
Johnson's runner-up finish kept him second in the Charles Schwab Cup standings behind Stewart Cink, who tied for 10th and retained the top position heading into the finale.
Jerry Kelly finished third at 14-under, while George McNeill, Soren Kjeldsen and Scott Hend shared fourth at 13-under.
There were disappointments elsewhere in the field.
Michael Block tied for 10th but finished 42nd in the points standings, six places outside the championship field. Bernhard Langer, who skipped the tournament, finished 45th and will miss the finale for the first time since joining the senior circuit full-time in 2008.
The Charles Schwab Cup Championship takes place November 12-15 in Phoenix.
For Fichardt, though, Sunday's improbable victory already made his season unforgettable.
