John Gerber and Timm Hamm break down Bermuda's dangerous weather, explain their PGA Tour betting strategies and reveal their picks on From the Rough.
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship might look like a birdie opportunity on paper, but PGA of America member John Gerber believes the PGA Tour's shortest course could deliver some of the most frustrating golf players will face all season.
During Wednesday's edition of From the Rough on Fan Stream Sports, Gerber and co-host Timm "IndyCarTim" Hamm previewed the tournament at Port Royal Golf Course, where the weekend forecast threatens to turn a wide-open betting event into a battle against the elements.
Hamm highlighted the possibility of Sunday wind gusts reaching 35 mph, accompanied by heavy rain and potential interruptions.
"This place isn't flat. It has a lot of hills," Gerber explained, emphasizing how Port Royal's elevation changes complicate already challenging coastal winds.
Gerber believes experience playing in windy conditions could prove more important than distance off the tee.
"This is just kind of a patience test," he said, pointing to the importance of controlling ball flight and handling Bermudagrass greens.
That philosophy shaped Gerber's outright selections.
Eric Cole leads his card at 25-1, with Gerber citing Cole's South Florida background, precision and familiarity with Bermuda putting surfaces.
"The golf course fits," Gerber said. "He's a South Florida guy, used to playing in the wind."
Former Bermuda champion Seamus Power follows at 30-1, with Denny McCarthy at 33-1.
Gerber particularly likes Power's experience competing in Ireland's windy conditions, while McCarthy's putting ability makes him another intriguing contender.
"When is it going to be?" Gerber asked about McCarthy's breakthrough opportunity. "Best putter in the world."
His biggest outright longshot is Vince Whaley at 60-1, supported by recent finishes of third and fifth in Bermuda.
Gerber also selected Ben Kohles at +250 and Davis Riley at +900 for top-10 finishes, along with Chan Kim at +350 and Taylor Montgomery at +400 in the top-20 market.
Montgomery generated the episode's most entertaining disagreement, with Gerber insisting the golfer is ready for a resurgence despite Hamm's skepticism.
Meanwhile, Hamm's Wheel of Misfortune produced Cameron Champ at 250-1 to win, Taylor Moore at +450 for a top 10 and Luke List at +700 for a top 20.
Gerber also explained why he passed on tournament favorite Ben James, despite praising his potential.
"I can't take him at 11 to one," Gerber said, questioning the value of backing a player facing an unfamiliar course in potentially severe conditions.
With $6 million in prize money available and valuable FedExCup Fall positioning at stake, the hosts agree that Bermuda could produce an unpredictable finish.
And if Sunday's forecast materializes, even a substantial lead might not be safe.
