Jordan Spieth’s bogey-free 62 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson offered a loud reminder that his old magic might not be gone after all.

MCKINNEY - Jordan Spieth looked like Jordan Spieth again Friday at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, and for Dallas golf fans, that’s the kind of sentence that still hits hard.

Playing at TPC Craig Ranch, Spieth fired a bogey-free 9-under 62, his best round of the season and the kind of scorching score that instantly changed the energy around his week.

After opening with a 3-under 68, Spieth knew he needed to make a move to stay safely inside the cut line. Instead, he launched himself up the leaderboard.

The Dallas native poured in nine birdies, including six straight from Nos. 1-6, tying a personal PGA TOUR record. He also converted all four scrambling chances and rolled in more than 100 feet of putts, gaining nearly four strokes on the field with the flatstick alone.

“I felt fluid,” Spieth said, a simple line that carried plenty of weight.

For a player who has spent recent years trying to rebuild his swing, his confidence and his health, this looked like a throwback.

Spieth wasn’t explaining away loose shots afterward. There weren’t many. He was talking about feel, rhythm and trust.

“I know what needs to happen,” Spieth said. “But putting it all together into a fluid stroke and then being able to be outwardly focused has been the goal.”

The group had fireworks everywhere. Chris Kirk and Sungjae Im helped create a wild morning wave, with the trio combining for 19 birdies and three eagles.

Im’s ace from 224 yards at the par-3 seventh only added to the show.

Spieth called it “one of the prettiest hole-in-ones I’ve ever seen.”

But the loudest statement belonged to Spieth. The driver wasn’t perfect, but everything else was sharp enough to remind everyone what happens when he gets hot.

For one electric morning near Dallas, vintage Spieth was back.
