Maria José Marín captured the Augusta National Women’s Amateur at 14-under, firing a final-round 68 and setting a new tournament scoring record.
Maria José Marín delivered a star-making performance Saturday at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, closing with a 4-under 68 to win the title at 14-under par and set a new tournament scoring record.
The Arkansas standout and reigning NCAA individual champion finished at 202 total, two shots better than the previous 54-hole mark and four clear of the field.
Marín began the final round one shot behind Asterisk Talley, but her steady play and poise on Augusta National’s back nine changed everything.
As pressure mounted late in the day, Marín stayed composed and took advantage of the opening in front of her, turning a tight leaderboard into a runaway win.
The turning point came around Amen Corner, where Augusta National once again proved unforgiving.
Marín kept her round on track with a clutch par save at the par-3 12th after missing the green, then picked up a birdie at the par-5 13th to seize control. That swing became even more important as Talley, who had played bogey-free golf deep into the tournament, ran into major trouble on the 12th and watched her lead disappear in a hurry.
From there, Marín handled the moment like a champion.
Even after a bogey on the 15th trimmed her advantage, she answered immediately with one of the best shots of the day at the par-3 16th. Her tee shot settled inside 10 feet, and the resulting birdie restored command of the tournament and removed any remaining doubt.
By the time Marín walked up the 18th fairway, the title was hers to finish off. She calmly made par, then let the emotion pour out as she celebrated with her family behind the green.
At just 19 years old, Marín now owns one of the biggest titles in women’s amateur golf.
Her name joins a prestigious list of Augusta National Women’s Amateur champions, and after this breakout win, she looks every bit like one of the sport’s next major stars.
