Memorial Tournament Weather Throws Round 3 Into Chaos

Storms hammered Muirfield Village again, suspending Memorial Tournament Round 3 with J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard tied for the lead.

The Memorial Tournament turned into a stop-and-start grind Saturday at Muirfield Village, and the weather may have stolen Round 3 from Dublin before the leaders could really separate.

Play was suspended for the second time at 4:35 p.m. ET because of inclement weather, leaving J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard tied at 9 under when the horn sounded.

The final pairing had made it to the sixth green, but with more than half the field still on the course, finishing the third round Saturday became a real long shot.

The PGA TOUR scheduled the next update for 6 p.m., with sunset expected at 8:58 p.m.

That leaves a narrow window, and the forecast wasn’t exactly friendly. Thunderstorms were expected in the morning and again late in the day, with the possibility of severe weather hanging over the evening.

Saturday already had one delay before this latest interruption. Round 3 resumed at 1 p.m. after storms paused play for more than an hour and 40 minutes.

The stop changed everything at a course already known for punishing even tiny mistakes.

Justin Thomas had already completed his round before the second suspension, and he didn’t sugarcoat how different Muirfield Village played after the first delay.

“Not even golf close,” Thomas said. “A completely different golf course,” he added.

That’s the story of the day. Muirfield went from gettable to nasty, then back into weather limbo before the leaders could finish their front nine.

Still, scoring was available before the horn. Every player inside the top 20 on the leaderboard was even par or better in Round 3 when play stopped, suggesting someone could still make a serious move once golf resumes.

For now, Poston and Gerard remain stuck on top, the field is frozen behind them, and the Memorial Tournament is waiting on the sky.
