Michael Kim buried four closing birdies, capped by a 24-footer, to shoot 59, break the TPC Twin Cities record and grab the 3M Open lead through 36 holes Friday.
Michael Kim attacked the 3M leaderboard with a flamethrower on Friday.
Kim fired a bogey-free, 12-under 59 during the second round at TPC Twin Cities, becoming the first PGA TOUR player to break 60 this season. His historic performance included 12 birdies, a stunning finish and a new course record.
By the time Kim walked off the 18th green, he was 14-under through 36 holes and sitting atop the leaderboard.
And he earned every bit of the spotlight.
The fireworks began at the par-4 third, where Kim rolled in a 13-foot birdie putt. That opened the door to five consecutive birdies, with Kim repeatedly carving up TPC Twin Cities and leaving himself manageable chances.
He added another birdie at the ninth to turn in 6-under 29.
At that point, a great round was brewing. A historic one still seemed unlikely.
Kim birdied Nos. 10 and 12, but he arrived at the 15th tee still needing four birdies over his final four holes to reach golf’s most famous scoring number.
No pressure, right?
Kim responded by turning the finishing stretch into his personal highlight reel.
Kim birdied the 15th. Then the 16th. Then the 17th.
Suddenly, the 59 was real.
He reached the final green needing one more birdie, but his opportunity wasn’t exactly a tap-in. Kim faced a 24-foot putt with history waiting on the other side.
He buried it.
Kim immediately threw his arms into the air before delivering a celebratory fist pump as the crowd erupted. After spending much of the day peppering flagsticks with precise iron shots, he closed the deal with a putter that refused to cool off.
The final four birdies completed a flawless round featuring zero bogeys and a career-best score.
Kim’s 59 became just the 16th official round of 59 or lower in PGA TOUR history.
Jake Knapp was the most recent player to accomplish the feat, shooting 59 during the opening round of the 2025 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.
Kim now owns something even more immediate: the TPC Twin Cities course record and the 3M Open lead heading into the weekend.
There’s still plenty of golf remaining, but Friday belonged entirely to Michael Kim.
Twelve birdies. No mistakes. Four straight to finish.
That’s not just going low. That’s kicking down the door to history.
