Peter Malnati entered Detroit searching for momentum. One bogey-free round gave him the tournament lead and renewed confidence heading into Friday.

Peter Malnati has spent this PGA Tour season searching for answers, missing more cuts than he has made and struggling to find consistent form. On Thursday at the Rocket Classic, he found all of it at once.

Malnati opened the tournament with a career best 9 under 61, a bogey free round that tied the tournament scoring record at Detroit Golf Club and gave him a two shot lead after Round 1.

Malnati made seven birdies on the front nine and added two more on the back. After rolling in a 55 foot birdie putt on No. 11, he reached 9 under through 13 holes and briefly put a sub 60 round into play.

The putts cooled over the closing stretch, but the ball striking never did. Malnati gained 3.58 strokes on approach and led the field in driving accuracy, hitting 13 of 14 fairways for a 92.86 percent mark. He also hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation, a 94.44 percent clip that also led the field. His overall total of 8.20 strokes gained ranked first in the tournament after the opening round.

Low scores have become the norm at Detroit Golf Club. Even after course renovations converted two par 5s into par 4s to better reflect Donald Ross' original design, players continued to attack the course. Rickie Fowler and Ryan Gerard opened with 63s to sit two shots back, while Patrick Cantlay was another shot behind. Michael Brennan produced one of the rounds of the day with eight straight birdies, one shy of the PGA Tour record, moving into a group four shots off the lead with Keegan Bradley.

There is added significance to this week beyond the leaderboard. This is the final Rocket Classic before the PGA Tour moves to a new schedule in 2028. The field includes world No. 3 Cameron Young, U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama and Jackson Koivun. The Rocket Classic and next week's Wyndham Championship also represent the final opportunities for players to climb into the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings and qualify for the playoffs.

The lead is the reward for his best round of the season, a two-time PGA Tour winner who had struggled to build momentum throughout 2026. He heads into Friday with a two-shot advantage and renewed confidence. Three rounds remain, and the leaderboard is packed with proven players, so Malnati still has plenty of work ahead. But Thursday gave him something he had been missing most of this season: belief.
