Retief Goosen shoots a seven-under 65 to lead the SAS Championship, with Richard Green one shot behind as the Charles Schwab Cup playoff race intensifies in Cary.
Retief Goosen isn't showing any signs of slowing down.
The 57-year-old World Golf Hall of Famer delivered a seven-under 65 Friday to grab the first-round lead at the SAS Championship, putting himself in position for a milestone victory on PGA Tour Champions.
Playing at Prestonwood Country Club, Goosen posted nines of 32 and 33 to establish a one-shot advantage over Richard Green, who opened with a bogey-free 66.
For Goosen, there's considerably more at stake than another tournament trophy.
The two-time U.S. Open champion is chasing his sixth PGA Tour Champions victory and second of 2026 after capturing the Mitsubishi Electric Classic earlier this season. Another win would give him his first multiple-victory campaign since joining the senior circuit in 2019.
Goosen entered the tournament fifth in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, keeping himself firmly in the championship conversation as the regular season reaches its conclusion.
But he's got company near the top.
Green, 55, is searching for his second PGA Tour Champions title after breaking through at the 2025 Rogers Charity Classic. His clean scorecard Friday kept the Australian within striking distance.
Tag Ridings sits alone in third after shooting a five-under 67. The 52-year-old is still looking for his first Champions Tour victory after three runner-up finishes.
Five players share fourth at four-under 68, including former major champion David Duval, Paul Goydos, Søren Kjeldsen, Chad Campbell and Freddie Jacobson.
Another familiar name made history further down the leaderboard.
Bernhard Langer, 69, opened with a three-under 69, matching his age for the 51st time on PGA Tour Champions.
Meanwhile, the tournament carries enormous postseason implications.
The SAS Championship represents the final regular-season opportunity for players fighting to qualify for the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, with only the top 72 advancing.
Shane Bertsch entered the week occupying the critical No. 70 position, while Heath Slocum, Harrison Frazar, Fred Couples and Mathew Goggin were among those battling near the cutoff.
There's also a $200,000 incentive connected to the "Sprint to St. Louis" competition.
The three highest points earners across the final five regular-season tournaments will advance to next week's Stifel Charity Classic, where the best finisher among them collects the winner-take-all bonus.
Zach Johnson entered the week leading that competition, followed by Steven Alker and Vaughn Taylor.
For Goosen, however, the immediate objective is turning another fast start into a victory.
He's previously held or shared six opening-round leads on PGA Tour Champions but converted only one into a win.
Now he's got 36 holes to prove this time will be different.
