Rory McIlroy returns to Augusta National as defending Masters champion, embracing the moment and reflecting on what comes after golf’s grand slam.
Rory McIlroy is back at Augusta National, but this Masters feels nothing like the ones that came before it.
For years, McIlroy arrived carrying the weight of unfinished business, chasing the green jacket that would complete the career Grand Slam.
Now, Rory McIlroy enters the Masters as defending champion, and the mood around him has completely changed.
That shift was obvious before tournament week even fully began. McIlroy arrived at Augusta National earlier than usual, spent time taking in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and Drive, Chip and Putt, and even played a Sunday round with his father.
Instead of trying to fast-forward to Thursday, he’s letting himself absorb every part of the experience.
The difference showed up in a funny moment he shared from last year, when he arrived for dinner at the club just as the champions were gathering.
“I'm like, well, do I go and park way over at the parking lot?” McIlroy said. “Because I'm not going to park in the champions' parking lot.” He admitted he didn’t want to valet either, knowing the past winners were gathered above him. “Thankfully, that was the last time that I needed to do that,” he said.
This year, there’s no awkward arrival. McIlroy is the one hosting the champion’s dinner, and he sounds fully aware of what that means.
“I wouldn't care if the tournament never started,” McIlroy said. “That's sort of the difference.”
That doesn’t mean the internal questions are gone. In fact, they may have changed. After finally reaching the mountaintop, McIlroy is now wrestling with what comes next.
“The story as it relates to me is what do I do from now onwards,” he said. “What motivates me? What gets me going?”
For now, McIlroy seems comfortable sitting with that uncertainty.
“I think what I've realized is, if you can just really find enjoyment in the journey, that's the big thing,” he said, “because honestly, I felt like the career Grand Slam was my destination, and I got there, and then I realized it wasn't the destination.”
