Rory McIlroy fired a 7-under 63 at East Lake to reach 10 under, turning a frustrating TOUR Championship into a real Sunday shot at the FedExCup.
Rory McIlroy looked nearly out of the TOUR Championship after two uneven rounds at East Lake. Then Saturday happened.
McIlroy stormed back with a 7-under 63, reaching 10 under par and climbing into contention for the FedExCup finale.
He started the third round well off the pace, but by the time he finished, he had put himself within five shots of leader Viktor Hovland heading into Sunday. Hovland closed Saturday at 15 under, one shot ahead of Ryan Gerard.
The turnaround was driven by McIlroy’s putter.
Through the first two rounds, he had been one of the weakest players in the field on the greens. In Round 3, he flipped that completely, gaining nearly four strokes putting — the best performance in the field that day.
That mattered because McIlroy’s ball-striking had already been strong. He entered the weekend among the tournament leaders in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and remained one of the better approach players in the field.
Once the putts started falling, his score finally matched the quality of his swing.
McIlroy recovered from a bogey at the par-3 second by making birdies on four of his next five holes.
He really ignited on the back nine, where he made five birdies and converted a series of mid-range putts that had been missing earlier in the week.
The result was one of the best rounds of the day and a massive jump on a tightly packed leaderboard.
East Lake’s post-renovation setup has also helped keep the field compressed. The wider playing corridors have reduced the punishment for some misses, making it easier for one low round to dramatically change a player’s position.
That’s exactly what McIlroy did.
He began Saturday buried. He ended it alive.
There’s still work to do. Hovland owns the lead at 15 under, Gerard sits at 14 under, and several elite players are clustered between McIlroy and the top.
Scottie Scheffler, Adam Scott, Chris Gotterup and Ludvig Åberg were all at 12 under after 54 holes.
But five shots at East Lake isn’t insurmountable, especially for McIlroy when the putter catches fire.
After two days of frustration, the TOUR Championship suddenly has another superstar firmly in the Sunday conversation.
