The SAS Championship brings golf legends and playoff hopefuls to Cary, where a $2.3 million purse and Charles Schwab Cup postseason spots are on the line this week.
The PGA Tour Champions regular season reaches its finish line this weekend, and the SAS Championship promises considerably more drama than a typical October golf tournament.
With Charles Schwab Cup Playoff positions hanging in the balance, a collection of golf legends and hungry contenders will tee it up Friday at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, North Carolina, for three rounds that could determine how their seasons end.
For some, it's about winning another trophy. For others, it's about simply surviving.
Defending champion Alex Cejka returns to familiar territory after capturing last year's tournament at 9-under 207, winning by three strokes. The German veteran arrives with momentum following a playoff loss to Vaughn Taylor at Sunday's Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS.
Taylor, meanwhile, has quickly become one of the tournament's most compelling players.
The PGA Tour Champions rookie collected his first victory on the circuit last weekend and enters Cary holding third place in the "Sprint to St. Louis," a late-season competition offering a $200,000 bonus.
Taylor has accumulated 422,245 points in the five-event race, but his position is anything but secure.
Ryan Armour trails with 367,040 points, followed by Ben Crane at 345,160, Tag Ridings at 297,660 and Cejka at 278,329.
Zach Johnson leads with 708,755 points, followed by Steven Alker with 539,755. Neither is competing this week, leaving the other contenders fighting over the remaining finalist position.
The three qualifying players will compete for the bonus at next week's Stifel Charity Classic, with the highest finisher collecting the money.
There's also plenty of star power in Cary.
Seven World Golf Hall of Fame members are scheduled to compete, including Ernie Els, Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer.
Langer won at Prestonwood in 2012 and 2018, while Montgomerie captured the 2017 championship. Jerry Kelly, another two-time winner, returns looking for his third title.
But the biggest drama could involve golfers nowhere near the leaderboard's top positions.
Only the top 72 players in the Charles Schwab Cup standings advance to next week's playoff opener in St. Louis. That field eventually shrinks to 54 for the Simmons Bank Championship in Arkansas and 36 for the season-ending championship in Phoenix.
"There's no tomorrow" might sound like a postseason cliché, but for golfers sitting near the cutoff, it's an accurate description of the stakes.
Prestonwood, a par-72 layout measuring 7,237 yards, has hosted the SAS Championship since 2001. The tournament offers a $2.3 million purse, including $345,000 to the winner.
Golf Channel will televise all three rounds Friday through Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Eastern.
With playoff careers, significant money and championship opportunities at stake, Cary won't just crown another winner this weekend.
It'll also send several players home for the season.
