Scottie Scheffler finished the PGA Tour season sitting at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Unfortunately for Scheffler and the United States, he does not get any special treatment in the Ryder Cup competition, where he has lost all four matches he has played. He lost both matches on Friday and again on Saturday.
Scheffler is the first golfer to start 0-4-0 through the first four sessions of a Ryder Cup in modern history. It has happened three times prior for Europe, but all three instances came before the inclusion of continental Europe in 1979.
According to CBS Sports, no other No. 1-ranked player has ever gone winless through foursomes and fourballs at a Ryder Cup.
Scheffler is also winless in the last two Ryder Cup competitions. He failed to win a match in 2023 as well.
The United States trails the European team 11.5 to 4.5 heading into the singles matches Sunday afternoon.
Scheffler will tee off at 12:35 p.m. and take on Masters' Champion and No. 3 golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy. McIlroy has not lost in this edition of the Ryder Cup. He has gone 3-0-1.
Scheffler came into the Ryder Cup with such high hopes pinned to his chest. It is unfortunate that he was unable to achieve any success and put the Americans in the win column during one or more of his matches.
After losing the foursomes match on Saturday with Russell Henley, Scheffler expressed his remorse for not playing better, but gave credit to the European team of Viktor Hovland and Robert McIntyre.
“Russ and I, we battled hard out there. The guys we played against just played great,” Scheffler said after the match, via the PGA Tour website. “They did a good job. They holed the key putts. Obviously disappointed with the finish, but battled pretty hard this morning and going to go out and do it again in the afternoon.”
Tommy Fleetwood, of the European team, is playing lights out. He is 4-0-0 this weekend and has scored almost as many points as the entire United States team on his own. Fleetwood has been playing sensational golf this weekend and he seems to be picking up where he left off after winning the Tour Championship.
