Seamus Power and Austin Smotherman share the Bermuda Championship lead at 16 under, with fierce winds and PGA Tour playing privileges adding drama to Sunday's finale.
Seamus Power knows how to win at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Austin Smotherman knows what winning feels like right now. And with dangerous winds expected Sunday at Port Royal Golf Course, their final-round showdown could become a battle of survival.
Power and Smotherman finished Saturday tied at 16-under 197, two shots ahead of three challengers after navigating some of the toughest conditions of the tournament.
Power, the 2022 Bermuda champion, fired a 4-under 67, while Smotherman posted a 5-under 66 to continue his remarkable October surge.
But their circumstances couldn't be more different.
Smotherman captured his first PGA Tour victory earlier this month at the Bank of Utah Championship, securing a two-year exemption and putting himself in position to compete in next season's lucrative signature events.
Power, meanwhile, entered the week ranked 103rd in the FedExCup Fall standings. He needs to finish inside the top 100 to preserve full playing privileges for 2027.
That makes Sunday's final round about much more than another trophy.
Power's experience in windy conditions could prove valuable after gusts made club selection and distance control increasingly difficult Saturday.
"Today was proper wind, at least for me," Power said, acknowledging the challenge of controlling ball flight from Port Royal's elevated and uneven lies.
The Irishman made a crucial move at the par-5 17th, reaching the green with two 5-woods before converting a two-putt birdie that helped him catch Smotherman.
Smotherman produced his own highlight on the seventh hole, setting up a nine-foot eagle putt to accelerate his climb up the leaderboard.
But the closing stretch was considerably less comfortable.
On the par-3 16th, a controlled 7-iron sailed into a bunker well beyond the hole. Smotherman escaped with a bogey and later saved par on the 18th to maintain his share of the lead.
"Once we turned, I felt like the wind just kept picking up," Smotherman said.
The co-leaders won't have much breathing room.
Taylor Moore, Corey Conners and Ben Silverman share third at 14 under. Moore shot 66 Saturday, while Conners and Silverman each returned 69.
Twelve players remain within four shots of the lead, leaving plenty of potential contenders if Sunday's weather creates unexpected swings.
Tournament officials have already moved up final-round tee times because of the forecast for stronger winds and possible rain.
For Power, a victory would deliver his third PGA Tour title and a second Bermuda Championship crown.
For Smotherman, winning again would establish him as one of the hottest players on Tour.
One player is fighting to secure his future. The other is trying to take his career to another level.
And with Bermuda's notorious wind waiting, neither should expect an easy Sunday.
