Stewart Cink captured the Regions Tradition at 18-under, winning his second PGA TOUR Champions major of the year and fourth title of the season.
Stewart Cink is making life on PGA TOUR Champions look a little too comfortable right now.
The 52-year-old continued his scorching run Sunday at the Regions Tradition, closing with a 3-under 69 at Greystone Golf and Country Club to finish at 18-under 270 and secure a three-shot victory.
It marked Cink’s second senior major championship of the year, coming just two weeks after his Senior PGA Championship win in Florida.
Cink entered the final round with a three-shot cushion, but Colin Montgomerie briefly applied pressure by trimming the lead to two as the leaders made the turn. Cink answered like a player fully in control, rolling in back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 to push the advantage back to four shots and steady the entire tournament.
Scott Hend made the strongest late move, carding a final-round 65 after an eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie at No. 14.
But Hend couldn’t cash in on the remaining par 5s and settled for second place. Montgomerie shot 71 and finished third.
The win earned Cink $390,000 and strengthened his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings over Zach Johnson.
It was also his fourth PGA TOUR Champions victory this season and third in his last four starts. Dating back to last year’s season finale, Cink has now won five of his last eight events.
Ernie Els delivered one of Sunday’s wildest stretches, making consecutive eagles followed by a hole-in-one during a closing 68 that helped him tie for eighth.
Cink now heads to Houston for the Insperity Invitational as the defending champion, but golf won’t be the only thing on his mind.
His wife, Lisa, has an important appointment this week as she continues her battle with breast cancer.
