The U.S. Ryder Cup team will use a revamped 2027 points system featuring 31 events, six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks by Jim Furyk.
The PGA of America announced a new qualification system for Jim Furyk’s team, with points awarded only during the 2027 season across 31 designated events. The race begins at The American Express in January and runs through the BMW Championship in August.
That means results from the 2026 major championships will not carry over, a notable change from previous qualification formats.
The top six eligible Americans in the standings after the BMW Championship will automatically qualify for the team. Furyk will then make six captain’s selections during the week following the Tour Championship.
“I have worked diligently with our team and am pleased to implement a new qualifying process for the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Team,” Furyk said. “This system will help us identify the strongest players in September 2027.”
The biggest tournaments will carry the most weight.
Winners of the four major championships will receive 3,000 points, while The Players Championship winner will earn 2,850. Victories in PGA Tour Signature Events and the two qualifying FedEx Cup Playoff events will be worth 2,250 points, while winners of traditional full-field PGA Tour events will receive 1,500 points.
Every eligible American who makes the cut in those tournaments will receive some percentage of the available points.
The system also contains a couple of interesting wrinkles.
Opposite-field events won’t award Ryder Cup points, and at the Zurich Classic, both members of a team must be eligible for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in order to earn points.
The qualification structure puts a clear premium on performance during the actual Ryder Cup year rather than rewarding accomplishments from the previous season.
That should make 2027 particularly important for both established American stars and younger players trying to force their way onto Furyk’s radar.
The 2027 Ryder Cup will be played at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, with competition scheduled for Sept. 17-19.
