The U.S. erased a three-point Sunday deficit with a record singles performance, beating the Internationals 17-13 to win an 11th straight Presidents Cup.
The United States spent three days getting pushed around at Medinah Country Club. Then Sunday happened.
Trailing the International Team 10.5-7.5 entering singles, the Americans produced one of the most dominant final-day performances in Presidents Cup history, winning the session 9.5-2.5 to storm back for a 17-13 victory and an 11th consecutive Presidents Cup title.
It was also the largest final-day comeback to win the event.
“I think these guys never lost faith,” U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker said. “They went out and played their a**es off today.”
The comeback started quickly.
Cameron Young beat Ryo Hisatsune 3 & 2, while Justin Thomas finally earned his first Presidents Cup singles victory with a dominant win over Corey Conners. Scottie Scheffler followed with a 2 & 1 victory over Nico Echavarria.
The Internationals got early points from Tom Kim and Sungjae Im, but the American depth eventually took over.
Chris Gotterup survived Christiaan Bezuidenhout 1 UP, Patrick Cantlay closed out Adam Scott, and Collin Morikawa edged Hideki Matsuyama after Matsuyama bogeyed the 18th.
Those results pushed the United States ahead for the first time all weekend.
Then the rookies finished it.
Twenty-one-year-old Jackson Koivun rallied from 2-down at the turn to beat Si Woo Kim and completed an unbeaten Presidents Cup debut.
Jacob Bridgeman delivered the clincher.
With the U.S. needing one full point to secure the trophy, Bridgeman reached the 18th green against Min Woo Lee with the match still alive. Lee made bogey, and Bridgeman calmly converted from inside five feet to trigger the celebration.
The result was stunning considering where the Americans stood Saturday night.
The International Team had carried a historic three-point lead into Sunday and needed only five points from 12 singles matches to win for the first time since 1998.
Instead, the Americans overwhelmed them. Medinah has seen famous Sunday collapses before.
This time, the home team was the one delivering the comeback.
