Viktor Hovland has Norway buzzing again, and this time it’s not just because of Erling Haaland and the World Cup party spilling across North America.

Hovland fired a 6-under 64 on Saturday at the Travelers Championship, pushing himself into the Sunday spotlight with a one-shot lead over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

At 25, Hovland already owns the title of Norway’s best male golfer. Now he’s got a chance to make another loud statement by taking down the best player in the world head-to-head.

That’s not exactly a soft landing spot.

Scheffler is lurking and Hovland knows it. The rest of the field knows it. And Sunday at TPC River Highlands suddenly feels less like a final round and more like a heavyweight fight with wedges.

“It was really fun,” Hovland said after his third-round 64. “It’s been a while since I’ve been in this position.”

That position has been hard-earned. Hovland won the Valspar Championship last year to snap a two-year winless stretch, but his 2026 season hasn’t exactly been smooth.

He has two top-10 finishes, withdrew from the Memorial Tournament, missed the cut at the PGA Championship and missed another cut at the U.S. Open.

Still, there were signs. Hovland finished solo third at the RBC Canadian Open, his best result of the year, and he arrived at the Travelers believing his game was closer than the scorecards suggested.

“It’s a crazy game,” Hovland said.

Crazy, yes. But also dangerous when Hovland finds a swing thought he trusts. That’s what has stood out this week.

He hasn’t just been chasing birdies. He’s been chasing control. And when Viktor Hovland starts seeing the shots he wants, the leaderboard usually starts changing fast.

Meanwhile, Norway’s sports moment keeps getting louder. Haaland has become the face of Norwegian soccer, while fans have carried their “rowing” celebration into the World Cup scene.

Hovland laughed about it, calling it part of the country’s Viking DNA.

Now, he might give those same fans a reason to row into golf’s spotlight.

Hovland said he and Scheffler have “a lot of respect” for each other’s games, but respect won’t mean much once the final round starts. Scheffler is close enough to pounce, and Hovland is close enough to slam the door.

Sunday at the Travelers Championship has a simple hook: Norway’s top golfer, America’s top golfer and one trophy sitting between them.
