Viktor Hovland buried a playoff birdie to beat Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship, turning Monday morning into a Norwegian party.
Viktor Hovland beat Scottie Scheffler in a Travelers Championship playoff Monday morning, and he did it with the kind of cold-blooded finish that makes a win feel bigger than one trophy.
After chasing down Scheffler on Sunday and surviving an overnight pause, Hovland returned to the 18th hole and delivered.
Both players split the fairway. Scheffler, the world’s most relentless machine, stuffed his approach inside 4 feet. The crowd sounded ready for another Scottie moment.
Then Hovland answered with his own dagger.
The Norwegian star knocked his approach inside 7 feet and faced a slippery birdie putt that could’ve easily slid away.
Instead, Hovland poured it in, letting the putt grab the edge and fall. Scheffler still had a short birdie look to extend the playoff, but his putt burned the left edge and stayed out.
Just like that, Hovland had his Travelers Championship win.
It was Hovland’s 10th worldwide victory and eighth PGA TOUR title, his first since the 2025 Valspar Championship.
For a player who’s already proven he can win elite events, this one still had a different feel. He didn’t backdoor it. He didn’t wait for Scheffler to collapse.
He stared down the best player in golf and beat him with a birdie when the pressure was at its loudest.
Scheffler deserves credit, too. He made an 8-foot par putt in fading light Sunday just to force the playoff, then nearly ended it Monday with a brilliant wedge into the 18th green.
But this season keeps adding near-misses to his resume. The Travelers marked his fourth runner-up finish of the year after opening the season with a victory at The American Express.
The scene around the playoff only added to the madness. Norwegian fans chanted for Hovland, American fans fired back for Scheffler, and the whole thing briefly felt more like a Ryder Cup than a Monday morning PGA TOUR finish.
There’s also a fun twist: Norway’s World Cup team is headed to Dallas next, Scheffler’s hometown. After Hovland spoiled Scottie’s Monday in Connecticut, the Norwegian takeover may not be done yet.
For Hovland, this wasn’t just another win. It was a statement. Against Scottie Scheffler. In a playoff. With the whole golf world watching.
