Will Cannon, Alvaro Ortiz and Sandy Scott share the 36-hole lead at 14 under as the Korn Ferry Tour Finals tighten at the Simmons Bank Open.
The Simmons Bank Open has turned into a three-man race at the halfway point, with Will Cannon, Alvaro Ortiz and Sandy Scott tied at 14-under 126 entering the weekend at Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Each player took a different path to the same number, and the stakes are high with the event serving as the first stop of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals.
Cannon followed his opening 9-under 61 with a 65 to reach 14 under and match the tournament’s 36-hole scoring record. His first-round 61 also tied the event’s 18-hole mark.
The 32-year-old entered the week No. 61 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, meaning a strong finish could dramatically improve his position as the postseason progresses. Cannon has just one top-10 finish in 17 starts this season, but he’s now in position for the biggest result of his 2026 campaign.
Ortiz matched Cannon’s opening-round brilliance Friday with a bogey-free 61, also tying his career-low Korn Ferry Tour score.
He arrived in Tennessee in much safer territory at No. 20 in the points standings, boosted by his victory at the UNC Health Championship. Ortiz already has one Korn Ferry Tour title this season and is chasing another result that could strengthen his path toward PGA Tour status.
Scott has been the steadiest of the three.
The former Texas Tech standout posted consecutive 7-under 63s, giving him his first 36-hole lead or co-lead in a Korn Ferry Tour event. Scott entered the week No. 30 in the standings and continues to build on a solid second season on Tour.
The chase pack remains dangerous.
Former Texas A&M golfer Phichaksn Maichon sits at 11 under and is the only player in the field without a bogey or worse through 36 holes. He entered the tournament No. 76 in the standings and needs a strong finish to extend his season.
The pressure goes beyond the trophy.
Only the top 132 players in the standings after Sunday advance to next week’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, and several players who began the week outside that line survived the cut.
That combination of leaderboard pressure and career stakes should make the weekend volatile.
Cannon, Ortiz and Scott have created separation at the top. Now comes the harder part: staying there.
