Zach Johnson Turns Iowa Homecoming Into Senior Rout

Zach Johnson crushed his Iowa homecoming at the Principal Charity Classic, winning by four shots in his PGA TOUR Champions debut at Wakonda Club on Sunday.

Zach Johnson didn’t just win the Principal Charity Classic. He turned his Iowa homecoming into a statement.

Making his first appearance in the PGA TOUR Champions event in his home state, Johnson closed with a 5-under 67 on Sunday at Wakonda Club and finished at 17-under par, four shots clear of Richard Green and Retief Goosen.

For a player who grew up in Cedar Rapids, roughly two hours from Des Moines, this wasn’t some routine senior-circuit trophy grab. This was personal.

And Johnson played like a guy who knew exactly what the week meant.

The 49-year-old opened with a steady 69, detonated the leaderboard with a Saturday 63 and then handled Sunday like a closer.

No chaos. No late collapse. No hometown pressure swallowing him whole.

Just clean golf, sharp scoring and a second PGA TOUR Champions victory in what’s quickly becoming a dangerous first season on the 50-and-over tour.

“Pure gratitude,” Johnson said afterward, perfectly summing up a week loaded with nostalgia, pressure and payoff.

He added that being back home gave him perspective, especially surrounded by people who helped shape his career.

But the most revealing line may have been this: “I felt like I had already won before I teed off.”

That freedom showed.

Johnson didn’t play tight. He played like a two-time major champion who suddenly looks very comfortable terrorizing PGA TOUR Champions fields.

After winning the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in March in his senior debut, Johnson now has two victories already. That’s not easing into the Champions Tour. That’s kicking the door open.

Green shot 68 and Goosen posted 70 to share second place, but neither could apply enough heat to make Johnson sweat.

David Bransdon and Brett Quigley finished at 12-under, five shots off the pace, while Steve Stricker tied for 40th at 5-under after a final-round 69.

Stricker’s appearance carried its own intrigue, as he played for the second straight week after beginning his season at the tournament he hosts in Wisconsin. But Sunday belonged to Johnson, and really, it belonged to Iowa, too.

The Principal Charity Classic gave Johnson a stage. He brought the emotion, the firepower and the finish.

For everyone else on PGA TOUR Champions, the message is getting loud fast: Zach Johnson isn’t here for a ceremonial lap. He’s here to win.
