The Los Angeles Angels made yet another move ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline as the club looks to retool for the future.
The Los Angeles Angels kicked off the Major League Baseball trade deadline by sending both catcher Logan O'Hoppe and right-hander Chase Silseth to the Texas Rangers for minor leaguer Angel Arredondo.
Wednesday night's trade has received mixed reviews, with the majority of insiders and analysts saying that the Angels overpaid for Arredondo, though he is a highly skilled prospect.
Los Angeles didn't stop there, with the club continuing to sell by making yet another move early Monday morning
"BREAKING: The Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring right-hander Jose Soriano in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels," ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Monday.
Soriano has a 3.29 ERA with a 127-57 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .217 batting average against and a 1.25 WHIP in 123 innings pitched across 22 games this season.
In return, early reports indicate that the return package from Toronto included Blue Jays' top shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheleti, and righty Angel Rivero.
Nimmala, the No. 43 prospect on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 list, was Toronto's No. 2 prospect in the farm system. The infielder has spent the bulk of this season with the Blue Jays' Double-A affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats, where he hit .279 with 13 extra-base hits including four home runs, 11 RBIs and a .806 OPS in 33 games this season.
Both of the recent trades can be attributed to the Angels' extremely disappointing 2026 season. The club is in the basement of the American League West and the MLB as a whole, sitting at 43-69 entering Monday.
Interim general manager John Mozeliak has been busy over this past week, kicking off what appears to be yet another rebuild in Anaheim.
Whether this rebuild will actually lead to success for the Angels is yet to be seen, but Mozeliak is firing on all cylinders in an attempt to bring Los Angeles competitive baseball again.
One thing is for certain, though: the Angels are building for the future and punting on stringing together a successful campaign for fans to enjoy in the next year or two -- possibly even for the next half-decade.
There could be more moves to come in the following hours leading up to the Aug. 3 trade deadline, with players like Zach Neto and Reid Detmers still expected by many to find themselves wearing a new uniform by Tuesday, Aug. 4.
