A nightmare sixth inning and Shohei Ohtani’s explosive homecoming handed the Los Angeles Angels a historic 30th loss as Jose Soriano’s command vanished.
The Los Angeles Angels are officially the first team this season in the majors to have 30 losses.
The Angels lost their fifth straight game in an ugly 15-2 blowout at home against Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Angels ace Jose Soriano had his worst outing of the season, going 5.1 innings with six runs and six walks with six strikeouts, although he allowed just one hit in a very odd stat line.
Will Smith started the scoring with a sac fly in the first, and the sixth inning is where things unraveled for Soriano.
Soriano walked Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, then hit Smith with a pitch to load the bases. Andy Pages walked, and Max Muncy walked as two runs came in without the Dodgers recording a hit.
Chase Silseth came in, but he allowed three runs, all of which were given to Soriano after he left the bases loaded.
Soriano's ERA rose to 2.41, although the Angels pitcher is having a stellar year but just couldn't find his command in the sixth inning.
Jo Adell drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth with a double, and those were the only runs the Angels scored all night.
Shohei Ohtani torched his former team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and five RBIs, although the triple was more so an inside-the-park home run in a very odd turn of events.
That began the scoring once again as Ohtani hit a three-run "triple" after review confirmed it was not a ground rule double.
Betts then hit a solo home run, and the Dodgers plated five more runs in the top of the ninth to add more insult to injury for the Angels.
Alek Manoah, the former Toronto Blue Jays star, appeared out of the bullpen and allowed eight earned runs on six hits in just 1.1 innings, a far cry from his five shutout innings in his start on May 11 against the Cleveland Guardians.
Here's a stat that sums up just how bizarre this game was for the Angels: The Dodgers scored 15 runs on 10 hits, and the Angels just scored two runs on eight hits.
The Angels are reeling badly, but there is some hope on Sunday in the series finale. Roki Sasaki takes the mound for the Dodgers, and he has struggled with a 5.88 ERA.
Offseason acquisition Grayson Rodriguez is set for his first start for the Angels.
