The Los Angeles Angels got a stellar start from Reid Detmers, but the offense failed again in yet another loss.

The Los Angeles Angels lost their second straight game to the New York Yankees, 6-3 in 10 innings, as they wasted yet another excellent start from Reid Detmers when the Yankees broke open a 1-1 game in the tenth with a five-run outburst.

The featured matchup was Detmers vs. Cam Schlittler of the Yankees, and both starters delivered fine performances, giving up a single run each with Detmers going seven innings and Schlittler lasting through eight.

The Yankees got on the board first in the fourth, starting with back-to-back singles by Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger. Detmers managed to get a double play, but Amed Rosario doubled to bring home Bellinger and give New York a 1-0 lead.

The Angels counter was simpler, as Vaughn Grissom his a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1 in the seventh. Neither team did anything offensively after that, so the game went into extras.

The tenth was a typical Halos hot mess, as reliever Luke Murphy quickly fell apart. The rally started with a single from Jose Caballero, and a walk to Jazz Chisolm Jr. loaded the bases.

Murphy got within an out of getting out of the jam, but the floodgates opened with an Austin Wells single to score two runs, and Bellinger singled to bring home another. Trent Grisham and Ben Rice also delivers RBI singles, and by the time the inning was over the Angels were down 6-1.

The Halos did make a little noise in the bottom of the inning, though, as Moises Ballasteros homered to score ghost runner Wade Meckler to account for the final score of 6-3.

The loss gave the Yankees the series win, and it sent the Angels to their ninth loss in their last ten games. It also dropped LA back into the AL West basement after the A’s win over the Texas Rangers.

Detmers did drop his ERA to 3.44 as the starters continue to shine, and Grissom has had his moments in the middle of the lineup, although that’s really not where he belongs right now. The bottom of the lineup is strictly Triple-A quality, so it’s fair to expect more of the same results-wise going forward.

The Angels get an off day today, then hit the road for an East Coast swing, starting against the Pittsburght Pirates tomorrow night. The Pirates have fallen back to the far edge of the NL wild-card race after an impressive start, and Ryan Johnson and Jared Jones will do the pitching honors tomorrow night.
