The Los Angeles Angels have reportedly fired their pitching coach, assistant pitching coach and bullpen coach amid another bad season.

The Los Angeles Angels have announced that they have parted ways with several coaches amid another awful, playoffs-less season.

The Angels fired pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Maddux was on a one-year deal with Los Angeles after spending the last three seasons with the division-rival Texas Rangers. The Angels have issued the most walks (508) and carry a 4.51 ERA, which is seventh-worst in Major League Baseball this season.

Maddux began his coaching career with the Milwaukee Brewers, serving as the pitching coach from 2003 to 2008 before joining the Rangers for his first stint with the organization. Maddux was with Texas from 2009 to 2015, helping the team reach the World Series in 2010 and 2011 before winning the championship in 2023.

The 64-year-old then joined the Washington Nationals for the 2016 and 2017 seasons before spending the next five seasons as the St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach. Everywhere Maddux has gone, he’s directly contributed to successful pitching staffs and helped take them to the postseason.

He helped the Rangers own the best team ERA (3.41) in baseball last year before joining the Halos for this season.

Scott got his start with the Colorado Rockies, joining the organization as a pitching coach and minor league pitching coordinator in 2009. He became the bullpen coach of the Rockies in November 2019 before being promoted to pitching coach in October 2021. He was relieved of his duties at the end of the 2025 season and joined the Halos as assistant pitching coach in 2026.

Chiti has a long and extensive career in baseball dating back to the mid-1970s but began his coaching career in 1982 and has held numerous titles within the industry. This was his second stint with the Angels and first season as the bullpen coach.

“After spending time discussing with Kurt [Suzuki] where we are as a coaching staff and where we want to go in the future, we felt it was best to make a change,” interim general manager and baseball operations consultant John Mozeliak said following the moves.

“With seven weeks remaining, we plan to use this time to evaluate what additional steps are needed to elevate our entire pitching program and best position us for success moving forward.”

Tim Leveque was named the interim pitching coach, and Michael Wuertz was named the interim bullpen coach. Leveque joined the organization this year after a long history with Mozeliak in St. Louis, while Wuertz has been with the franchise for 11 seasons.

“Leveque spent nearly 20 years working in the Cardinals player development system, the majority of those years under Angels interim GM John Mozeliak,” The Athletic’s Katie Woo wrote on X. “His final season with St. Louis was last year.”

The Angels have the worst record in MLB at 45-74.
