The Los Angeles Angels rebounded nicely from last night’s tough loss to the New York Yankees by pounding out five solo home runs in support of a fine start by Reid Detmers, as they routed the Yanks, 7-1, to even their four-game series at one game apiece.
The Angels started the scoring off with yet another home run barrage in the first inning, courtesy of Mike Trout, Jo Adell and Jorge Soler in consecutive at-bats. It was a remarkable sequence off Yankee starter Ryan Weathers, who barely made it through five innings and wound up giving up five runs, all of them earned.
The Angels played more long ball in the fourth, this time with yet another solo shot from Oswald Peraza, who had a 3-for-3 night as he continues to look like the Angels’ answer at second base. Peraza’s home run made it 4-0 as the Halos started to break the game open.
Reid Detmers rebounded form his struggles against the Atlanta Braves with a fine outing against New York. Detmers struck out 11 hitters in seven innings, and at one point he retired 13 straight Yankees. Detmers also provided length on a night the Angels badly needed it after their bullpen was overextended in last night’s 11-10 walk-off loss. Detmers had a rocking-chair outing as he simply threw strikes and hit his spots with different pitches, and he wound up throwing 99 pitches with 69 going for strikes.
The Angels finally scored without the benefit of a homer with two more in the sixth inning, with both runs plated on a single by Yoan Moncada, who also had a fine night as he also homered with a solo shot of his own in the eighth. Moncada ended up going 2-for-4 with a three RBIs and a run scored as the bottom of the Angels lineup provided plenty of punch.
That made it 7-0, and the Yankees finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Ben Rice against reliever Chase Silseth, although Detmers did get charged with the run after allowing a pair of hits to open the inning. Silseth finished the inning without any further struggles, and Ryan Zeferjahn threw a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
The big footnote in this one was Trout, who tied former Yankees first baseman Mark Texeira with the 409th home run of his career. The series continues tomorrow night against Luis Gil of the Yankees, but the Angels haven’t announced their starter yet.
