The Los Angeles Angels submitted a signature loss last night against Colorado as they were epically bad.
The Los Angeles Angels season has become a lost cause, and the Angels continued to prove it last night as they lost their second straight game to the Colorado Rockies in a “contest” between the two worst teams in baseball that saw them down 8-0 by the end of the fourth inning.
The Grayson Rodriguez comeback train got derailed badly in this one. Rodriguez gave up all eight runs in 3-2/3 innings, including eight hits, three of them homers, to go with three walks. The Colorado homers came from Willi Castro, TJ Rumfield and Hunter Goodman, and Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano gave up two runs in five innings to get the win.
The Angels also featured some memorably bad outfield play that was borderline comic relief with misplays from both Jo Adell in right and Wade Meckler in left, as Adell managed to bounce a fly ball off his glove and then his head to produce a homer for TJ Rumfield of Colorado in the process.
The Angels offense remained checked out in this one as they got seven hits but did no damage until the game was essentially basically over. Their two runs came in the fifth inning as a double by Meckler scored Mike Trout and Jorge Soler, but a trio of Rockies relievers shut them down from there.
Their lone bright spot for the Halos was reliever Sam Aldegheri, who pitched 5-1/3 innings of shutout relief after coming in for Rodriguez. That saved the Angels bullpen, which can’t get outs in the first place.
The Rockies have now won four of their last five, thanks in part to the Angels, who have now dropped three in a row and lost five of their last seven.
The bad Rodriguez start was especially tough to stomach. He provided brief stretches of hope in his earlier starts, but in this one he was familiarly bad as he put his team in a deep hole thanks to some “help” from his defense.
The Adell head shot will now continue to live for years on blooper reels next to a similar play from outfielder Jose Canseco back in the day, and in some ways it could be a signature play for the kind of baseball the Angels have been submitting lately.
The Angels will try to salvage the series finale tonight as they send Walbert Urena to the mound against Michael Lorenzen.
