The Los Angeles Angels are at 1-1 in their series against the Twins, with Reid Detmers on the mound in game three.
The Los Angeles Angels will try to regain the lead in their four-game series against the Minnesota Twins, and they should have a good chance to do it with Reid Detmers on the mound.
The series is currently tied at 1-1, with the Angels getting a win with a rare display of offense as they came from behind to get a 5-4 win. The Twins responded a with a shutout effort from Connor Prielipp and a pair of reliever to get a 3-0 win.
Detmers would love to return the favor, and based on his recent efforts he’s got a solid shot. He’s one of the bright spots in an Angels rotation that’s been tough to score on throughout the second half of the season, often with Detmers leading the way as the ace of the staff.
He’s given up just five runs in his last five starts, including three in his most recent one against the Seattle Mariners as he went six innings and gave up seven hits to go with a walk and eight strikeouts.
Before that he was even better, surrendering just a lone run against the likes of the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Detmers has won his last two starts, so he’ll also be looking to extend his personal winning streak.
Twins starter Joe Ryan has been a bit of a disappointment for Minnesota, as his ERA of 3.84 is higher than usual. It’s been that kind of season for the Twins, who contended briefly in the mediocre AL Central, but they’ve been well off the pace for some time now.
Ryan’s last few starts haven’t been anything to write home about, either. He surrendered four runs in four innings against the Cleveland Guardians in his last one, and three more in four innings against the Detroit Tigers. The Twins are basically playing out the string, and this is what happens to good pitchers like Ryan when things take that kind of turn.
The big question for the Angels is whether they’ll hit at all in this one, much less enough to give Detmers a liegitimate chance to win. The Angels lineup is a feast or famine affair, and the starters have been starved for runs on a regular basis this year.
The Angels are also on a quest to avoid 100 losses for the season, as they currently have 95 with eight games to play, so that’s another possible reason to watch this one.
