Stan Kroenke, owner of the Los Angeles Rams, is buying the Los Angeles Angels from owner Arte Moreno in a deal that is expected to be finalized in 2027.
Los Angeles Angels fans, your wishes have finally been granted.
According to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment has agreed to buy the Angels from owner Arte Moreno, ending his 23-year tenure with the franchise. The transaction is expected to be finalized during the first quarter of 2027.
The following statement was made by the ownership group:
“Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (‘KSE’) today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Angels Baseball Club from the Moreno family. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and approval by Major League Baseball.”
Los Angeles Rams owner, Stan Kroenke, is reportedly buying the franchise for a major league record amount – though that price hasn’t been released yet. Forbes valued the Angels at $2.8 billion in March, and the San Diego Padres just sold for the current record of $3.9 billion in a deal that was recently approved.
Unfortunately for Moreno, this time was coming sooner rather than later. Under his ownership, the Angels had 10 winning seasons, six playoff berths (none since 2014) and hadn’t won a postseason game since 2009.
Years of fans pleading for Moreno to sell the team finally culminated in the agreement, and the new ownership group owns multiple great franchises including the Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Colorado Rapids (MLS) and Arsenal (Premier League).
“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Kroenke said. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”
All of Kroenke's teams have won major championships in their respective leagues under his control, so the franchise appears to be in good hands moving forward.
Moreno offered this statement:
“The Angels Organization is pleased to announce this transaction with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner of the franchise. The Angels Organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to the fans, our employees, the players and our business partners.”
A brutal chapter of Angels baseball is coming to an end. Complaints from fans about spending and trying to win will be answered by an ownership group that has lots of money and is willing to spend to build a sustained winner.
