The Los Angeles Angels have decided to part ways with general manager Perry Minasian after a disappointing half-decade with the team.
The Los Angeles Angels are the latest in Major League Baseball to shake up their front office.
After bringing on Perry Minasian to be the general manager of the club in Nov. 2020, the Angels went on to lose 500 games in the coming half-decade and failed to make the postseason every year.
Los Angeles also currently sits at the bottom of the American League West standings with a 34-48 record this season, entering Friday.
Now, the Angels have opted to make a change in the front office, officially cutting ties with Minasian.
The club took to X/Twitter Friday evening to report "The Angels announced that the Club appointed John Mozeliak as Baseball Operations Consultant, serving as Interim General Manager after relieving Perry Minasian of his General Manager duties."
Mozeliak has his work cut out for him, as he'll be inheriting a team with zero hope for the postseason this year, as well as MLB.com's 28th-ranked farm system-- meaning he's got more than enough on his plate to try to help right the ship. There is no timetable yet for announcing a new general manager, but Mozeliak is said to be playing a role in the hiring process.
Mozeliak has plenty of experience under his belt, as he was the President of Baseball Operations with the St. Louis Cardinals from June 2017 until the end of his contract in 2025, overall spending 30 years with the club.
Disregarding recency bias, Mozeliak helped build one of the most successful franchises in MLB in St. Louis, winnings two World Series; 2006 and 2011. On top of that, the Cardinals made the postseason 17 times dating back to 1996.
The Angels promptly provided a press release, but there is still much to be seen with the situation.
There will likely be an official press conference in the coming days, but for now, Mozeliak and the Angels will be working toward finding a suitable replacement for Minasian.
For now, the club will look to navigate the remainder of the season while operating without a true GM, but have the tools to do so with Mozeliak involved.
