After a historic 100-loss season, the Halos must target proven veterans to stabilize a struggling infield and provide defensive reliability alongside emerging stars Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel.

Many areas on the roster require the full attention of the front office this winter for the Los Angeles Angels after a 100-loss season – the first in its history. Shortstop will be held down by young star Zach Neto, barring a blockbuster trade, and Nolan Schanuel has played well enough to be the first baseman in 2027. Still, second and third base are among some of the biggest questions for the Halos to answer this offseason.

To answer those questions and strengthen the infield surrounding Neto and Schanuel, the Halos front office needs to be aggressive this free-agent window. Fans may not be expecting a postseason berth next season, but they demand some changes to be made to steer the team in the right direction as they head into this new era in franchise history.

Here are three free agent infielders the Halos should take a serious look at this winter:

Jazz Chisolm Jr., 2B

Chisolm Jr. has expressed his desire to return to the New York Yankees, but that feeling doesn't seem to be mutual. Coming off the back of a step back in terms of production, the Angels might be able to swoop in on a drier-than-expected market for Chisolm Jr.

The 28-year-old recorded an OPS just a few ticks under league average while still providing elite baserunning and defense. Though a long-term contract may not be as likely for Chisolm Jr. this winter, a short-term deal with the Halos could be beneficial for both parties.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa, 2B/3B/SS

IKF played just 66 games for the Boston Red Sox in 2026, but still managed to be worth 1.6 bWAR in that short sample. His value may not be coming from his 81 OPS+ bat, but rather from his defensive prowess. His ability to play all over the infield is a big plus, although his lack of arm strength serves him best at second base – perfect for an Angels squad looking for experience at the keystone position.

Current Angels infielders Oswald Peraza, Denzer Guzman, Vaughn Grissom, and Christian Moore combined for a negative bWAR in 2026, clouding the production of Schanuel and Neto at first and shortstop, respectively. IKF’s floor would immediately provide a boost to the Angels infield on what should be a fairly cheap deal.

Ramon Urias, 3B/2B

Urias is fighting for another shot this offseason after his 2026 campaign was tainted by an injury that kept him off the field for most of the year and limited his impact when actually on the diamond. His 13 hits in 43 games is certainly not enticing, but there is a question as to how much of that can be attributed to his injuries.

Still, Urias could help the Angels at third base, a position where he won a Gold Glove in 2022. While his bat was amiss this season, Urias still showed he is a positive defender, recording three defensive runs saved at third base in just 33 games at the hot corner. It would be a risky signing, but the Halos could get positive value on the seven-year veteran if his bat inches back to his normal, healthy numbers while maintaining his defensive value.
